5.0 out of 5 stars Super Scoops! Love this spider!
Bought both the size 5 and 7. I use BOTH frequently, but size 7 is the one I use almost daily. I scoop vegetables, ravioli and pot stickers out of
boiling water safely with the size 7 (to avoid the breakage caused when you dump in a colander)!! The 7 fits in most pots despite the size. I like the size 5 for the frying pans and deep fryer to keep the breading intact...

3.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but protruding wires shred sponges and towels
As others have said, strainers with wide mesh like this drain boiled and fried items better than typical screen-type strainers. Surface tension of water and oils get carried along easier with finer mesh. This strainer allows you to tap off excess water/oil easily and will drip less than slotted spoons or fine mesh.

My problem is that the ends of the wires...

I like the size 5 for the frying pans and deep fryer to keep the breading intact or scooping seafood quickly. The wooden handles are long so you can avoid the hot steam and oil! No more carrying dangerously heavy hot pots to the sink. The strainers are sturdy with handles that are very secure. I don't store them in drawers. I like them handy in the counter tool caddy near the range...they clear the cabinets easily.

Not much to say about this product, it's a strainer. It does however beat using a slotted spoon to lift food out of boiling water or hot grease. I just started using it to dip spaetzle out of the pot in between batches. Works pretty good. This is a nice "filler" item if you are looking for something to add to your order to avoid shipping and handling.

There seems to be an emphasis on mesh strainers in this country, and thats all I seem to find in the grocery stores. Perhaps thats why Joyce Chen created this product - deep frying is alot easier without a mesh because mesh strainers do not allow the hot oil to drain fast enough or completely. Then when this happens you end up with alot of oil soaked fried onion rings, calamari or pakoras - whatever it is. This strainer is a must have for proper deep frying.

I purchased this on whim as a Christmas gift for my husband, who is the cook in our house. He has already used it several times and we are both wondering how he survived without it! It is a very high quality utensil and it makes frying "delicate" food very easy. I highly recommend this strainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stainless Steel Strainer, November 9, 2006

I have been looking for one of these for a long time. I needed something that would gather more than a "slotted spoon". I love it! I highly recommend this strainer. It works great in hot oil and water and I just pop it in the dishwasher when I'm done - no problem!!!

I was surprised how sturdy this strainer is made. The bamboo handle is thick and well attached to the basket. I also like the percent of open area to wire in the basket which strains larger items really fast. This is going to replace my slotted spoon for most chores.

It may be just a strainer but I'm finding so many cooking uses for it I wonder how I've cooked without it! It can replace all those old strainer spoons and really drains the liquid. A kitchen "must-have".

I PURCHASED BOTH SMALL AND LARGER STRAINER. CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT ITEM. EASY TO USE, EASY TO CLEAN, FITS PURFECTLY IN POTS AND PANS, TAKES UP LITTLE SPACE. I HAVE BOTH HANGING ON INSIDE OF CABINET. BUY IT, YOU WILL BE PLEASED.

As others have said, strainers with wide mesh like this drain boiled and fried items better than typical screen-type strainers. Surface tension of water and oils get carried along easier with finer mesh. This strainer allows you to tap off excess water/oil easily and will drip less than slotted spoons or fine mesh.

My problem is that the ends of the wires wrapped around the outer ring stick out and were not wrapped flush. I discovered this by trying to hand wash the strainer - it shredded the sponge I used. Forget about wiping dry with a towel as it'll be snagged by the wires. The only practical way to hand wash is to swish in soapy water and air dry.

I spent a few minutes with a needle nose pliers in an attempt to bend the ends around so they don't snag so readily, but it still is a problem. I guess this strainer will be 'dishwasher only' for me.

O.K. for the price, but be aware of the wires...
