Human beings stripped of all but the lightest raiment dwell serene, contemplative and melancholy in this selection from a Tenneson exhibit at the International Center of Photography in New York City. In her introduction, Goldberg points out that Tenneson's work "composes itself around dualities": "angel and menace, childhood and age, beauty and sorrow." We see more than one madonna, a biblical patriarch, women and children arcanely adorned and obscurely posed. In an interview with Tannous, Tenneson calls herself a voyeur, but hers are the least erotic of nudes, meant to be "a kind of window on the psyche." Unfortunately, the interview is dominated by her trendy expositions in the "finding myself" mode. Tenneson has strong credentials in portrait, fashion, beauty, editorial and fine arts photography.

Another reviewer wrote, "Pictures of old people, fat people, etc., in various stages of undress" which gives you a very unfair idea of what this book is about. Many of the figures in this book are nude or semi-nude, many of the subjects are young and beautiful, and a few are old, a few are "fat." I count seven photographs which would fall into the "old and fat" category, and they are anything but revolting.

Tenneson's work touches me in ways I cannot easily articulate. I've spent hours poring over these photographs, yet it's difficult to describe this book with any brevity. I cannot say it better than this statement which appears in the introduction:

"Joyce Tenneson's world quietly, frequently, composes itself around dualities: angel and menace, childhood and age, beauty and sorrow, naked and veiled, earthy and ethereal."

Her work is definitely worth your while -- I recommend you find out for yourself!

Not worth buying... Photos are of good quality, just the subject matter is not interesting... Pictures of old people, fat people, etc.. in various stages of undress.
