In 1914, World War I, the bloodiest war ever at that time in human history, was well under way. However on Christmas Eve, numerous sections of the Western Front called an informal, and unauthorized, truce where the various front-line soldiers of the conflict peacefully met each other in No Man's Land to share a precious pause in the carnage with a fleeting brotherhood. This film dramatizes one such section as the French, British and German sides partake in the unique event, even though they are aware that their superiors will not tolerate its occurrence.

This movie restores ones faith in humanity, with an emphasis on the true meaning of Christmas. In the absurdity of war, the characters establish a connection with each other across the boundaries of nationality, religion, and person prejudice. They begin as cogs in the machinery of World War I, each with a strong sense of what they are personally leaving behind them - wifes, loved ones, careers, etc. Then, in a simple act of singing in the trenches on Christmas Eve, sanity breaks out among the three groups of warriors - French, German, and Scot. From there, they metamorphoses into a compassionate, caring, and sensitive human beings, who, by virtue of knowing each other, can no longer fight or justify the absurdity. The consequences that they pay and how they chose to do it runs the gambit from self-perservation to courageous. A superb movie.
