Review

A beautiful story of faith, hope, and second chances. Her characters are so real that they feel like old friends. Once you open the book, you won’t put it down until you’ve reached the last page. (Amy Clipston, bestselling author of the Kauffman Amish Bakery Series on Hopeful)

“Enjoyable and heartwarming.” (USA Today on Thankful)

The final book of the Return to Sugarcreek series has romance and secrets with sweet, lovable characters who will do what they must for their family...Gray’s books are a treat to read; her research on the Amish is incredible. She gives the culture the respect it deserves. (Romantic Times BOOKclub, 4 stars)

“Once again, Shelley has written a five star story you won’t be able to put down until the very end. JOYFUL is a page turner and will pull at your heart.” (Fresh Fiction for JOYFUL)

“As always, Ms. Shepard Gray, delivers a delightful read...proving book three of the series to be as enchanting as the first two.” (Reader-to-Reader for JOYFUL)

From the Back Cover

Return to Sugarcreek with bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray for a heartwarming story of second chances with a young Amish couple

Randall Beiler will sacrifice anything to take care of his younger siblings and the family farm, even if it means forsaking love. But when his brother offers pretty Elizabeth Nolt a job cleaning and cooking for the family, Randall is furious—and feels guilty about the way he once broke Elizabeth's heart. Then he learns that Elizabeth and her grandmother are struggling to make ends meet and he knows the offer, no matter how painful, is the right thing for everyone.

Elizabeth wants to refuse but she needs the work. Though she vows to protect her heart, spending time in the Beiler household makes Elizabeth realize that her love for Randall still burns strong. And though Randall keeps his distance at first, time and teamwork reveal that something deeper still connects them.

Elizabeth isn't sure what to think: Does Randall want her because he truly loves her, or because he needs a housekeeper? And if his feelings have changed for sure, Randall must find a way to show Elizabeth what she really means to him or risk losing his partner in life and love forever.

For those of us that have come to love and call Sugarcreek our home away from home, best-selling author Shelley Shepard Gray, takes us back in her latest novel Joyful, the third book in the Return to Sugarcreek Series. This has definitely been one of my favorites because I feel like I have come to know each of the couples we deal with in this novel, like they're close family friends. I've had the opportunity to get to know them and the struggles they have had up to the point we are reunited with them once again. For me, it's like having a really great television series, that you have to wait for each next episode to air so you can come back again and again to a place you'd love to be a part of.

Randall Beiler and Elizabeth Holt have been seeing one another for the last two years, and Elizabeth is just waiting for the day when he will finally ask her to marry him and join the large Beiler family. Just when she believes that day is finally here, Randall gives her news she wasn't quite expecting. He tells her that he needs to spend more time taking care of his family, now that his older brothers and sisters have gotten married and moved on. Still taking on role of caretaker, mother and father, and older brother leaves him at a disadvantage with the house failing into a state of needing constant cleaning, someone to do all the cooking, and helping to raise nine-year-old Kaylene who feels being left at home with four older brothers is beyond what she can take. So Randall's solution is to call things off with Elizabeth.

Now heartbroken, Elizabeth struggles to figure out a way to help pay her bills taking care of her grandmother since her mother has moved away to begin her own life.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I LOVE Amish fiction. I think I have read every Amish book in my library, plus all that I can get my hands on to review.

This book is written by best-selling author Shelley Shepard Gray, takes us back in her latest novel Joyful, the third book in the Return to Sugarcreek Series. I had actually forgotten that I had read the first two (that is not as strange as it sounds since like I said I read any Amish books I can find!) As soon as I started reading I remembered all the couples in the story like old friends, and the struggles that they went through in the previous books. It was nice to see how they were doing and I loved that the book included a little side story about one particular couple and their struggles.

Book three finds us back with the Beiler family - just with a different brother, Randall Beiler. with all of his older siblings married and moved out he needs to step up and take control of his younger siblings. He goes a bit crazy and completely changes his life, stopping everything that may distract him including his 'almost' fiance Elizabeth. Everyone's life is turned upside down. The Beiler household is living of baked potatoes, green beans, and chicken - and are completely sick of it. Elizabeth is the main caretaker of her grandmother since her mother left for a new life with her new husband. Struggling for money but being to proud to ask for help Elizabeth gets drawn back into the Beiler family.

The two main characters Randell and Elizabeth have some soul searching to do. What do they want with their life, what sacrifices are they willing to make. Will they have a second chance at love? You will have to read the book to find out.

If you like Amish fiction, you will love this book.

About the Book:

A young Amish couple gets a second chance at love in New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray’s final book in her Return to Sugarcreek series.

Randall Beiler is doing his best to put his family and the farm’s needs first, even forsaking love. But though he tries, Randall knows he needs help caring for his younger siblings and keeping the house together.

When his brother offers pretty Elizabeth Nolt a job taking care of the house and cooking for the family, Randall is furious—and guilty about the way he once broke Elizabeth’s heart. But when he learns that Elizabeth and her grandmother are struggling to make ends meet, he knows the offer, no matter how painful, is the right thing for everyone.

Elizabeth wants to refuse—to stay far away from the man who hurt her—but she needs the money. Though she vows to protect her heart, spending time in the Beiler household makes Elizabeth realize that, while she’s older and wiser, her love for Randall still burns strong.

Randal, too, seems to want something more. But does he want Elizabeth because he truly loves her—or because he needs a housekeeper? If Randall sincerely wants something more, he must find a way to show Elizabeth—or risk losing his chance at love forever.

Joyful includes a P.S. section with a letter from the author, discussion questions, and a teaser from her next book.

My Review:

All was right in Elizabeth Nolt's life, the man of her dreams was about to propose---any day or so she thought. It was strange to see Randall Beiler, her love in such a determined mood. She thought to herself, this is the day he will do it, the moment she longed for. She had waited so long, two years in fact for this moment.
