Book Description

May 6, 1998
Joyrides brings the heart of surfing to life with stories about some of its greatest practitioners. Learn the truth about the death of surfing legend, Bob Simmons. Hear about artist Andy Warhol's quest for the perfect surfboard. Enjoy tales of legends like Paul Strauch, Rabbit Kekai, Greg Noll and Pat Curren. Other stories concern nobel quests by surfers that few of us have ever before heard of. Fourty-six stories in all. Outlaws, saints, wisemen, and fools harmonize to create a tone so wonderfully clear that it will be cherished by surfers and non-surfers alike for decades to come.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Ahrens uses verbal brush strokes, painting the subculture of surfing, while offering a feast of keen human observations. -- Julie Cox, North County Times

Funny, bawdy, poignant--a stoke of a good read! -- Steve Barilotti, Editor at Large, Surfer Magazine

Joyrides is a joy to read! -- Gary Taylor, The Coast News

Joyrides is a message from the heart of a born again soul surfer. A gem of a book. -- Steve Pezman, Publisher, The Surfer's Journal

From the Author

By the time that I finished writing Joyrides, I considered myself something of a surf historian. Hundreds of hours of interviews were distilled to create stories about the most celebrated surfers of our time. Then there were other surfers, like a heroic young Texas girl, who showed as much guts in her journey as anyone who ever faced a four-story nightmare at Maverick's. Also included in this volume are fiction pieces, which hint at the spiritual undercurrents involved in the sport of surfing.

Chris Ahrens' second collection of surf stories is must reading for those who are a part of the surfing culture and those who find it a fascinating part of the diverse American culture. The stories give you a real sense of both the history and the heart of surfing.

The book is funny, irreverent, and touching. You can have a great afternoon, reading it from cover to cover or you can read a quick story on the "john". Either way, you will find it great reading. The story of the death of Bob Simmons alone is worth the price of the book.

Enjoy!! Also check out Chris' first volume of surf stories "Good Things Love Water"

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Entertaining, Informative, December 6, 2002

This review is from: Joyrides: Surf Stories, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
Stories from the ocean-involved from all over as told by Chris Ahrens - a master storyteller. Some of the stories seem to be there to share history, some to share the great story, and most have at least a hint at the humorous side to life. Definately a good book to have around (as long as you don't mind smiling while you read).
