The previous review seems to me unfair. Granted, the book talks about Dr. Joy's experiences, which are unusual (to put it mildly), but if you're going to pick-up this kind of book, you should be prepared for a description of unusual and fantastic events.

Yes, Dr. Joy is a medical doctor, who had a successful practice, until he experienced a spiritual/medical crisis that put him on a whole different and decidedly non-scientific path. This book describes that journey, as well as his relationship with his spiritual teacher, and later an "inner teacher". The book appears to be written in good faith, and makes for compelling reading (all except the last chapter, which gets a bit dry with an extended description of body-energy work).

Dr. Joy appears to be a genuine spiritual seeker, who has travelled to places, in both the inner and outer world, that most of us would be afraid to visit. Morevoer, he is a mystic with credentials: not only a medical degree, but it also appears that he organized the spiritual development conferences that are described by both M. Crichton in Travels, and J. Orloff in her first book (note, they are also both MDs).

If you want to read about one man's spiritual journey, and share in some original mystical insights (and there are many, including his description of the "spiral mediation"), then this is a good place to start. However, if you think this is going to freak you out, then please look elsewhere.

I have been seeking and studying in the Personal/Spiritual Growth field for over 20 years and have explored many varied avenues. This book is written at the Intermediate level. It takes times to absorb the material and open to our own "spiritual inner voice", with honesty and unconditional love. After reading the book I was fortunate to attend Brugh's workshop and learn in more depth about chakras, the I Ching, dreamwork, and other spiritual tools. A great read, an honest and insightful teacher.

Mr. Joy combines a tale of his own personal spiritual journey with fairly mainstream yogic ideas concerning body energy, chakras, spiritual plane, etc. I found this book to be a very interesting read. Mr. Joy writes in a clear language that probably relates back to his training as a medical doctor. In terms of spiritual path, this book is not as "beginner" as The Celestine Prophesy.

I do not understand the views of a couple of the other reviewers here regarding the "voice" heard by Mr. Joy...a voice could be loosely interpreted as our intuition or subconscious or even a spirit guide.

Personally, I regret not having taken one of Mr. Joy's seminars; he is now on a two year sabbatical.
