The previous review seems to me unfair. Granted, the book talks about Dr. Joy's experiences, which are unusual (to put it mildly), but if you're going to pick-up this kind of book, you should be prepared for a description of unusual and fantastic events.

3.0 out of 5 stars Joy's way..not my way
this is my wife's book..It is his personal journey into self. Hard to get in to. The healing touch techniques he developed are valuable and is the only redeeming quality this book has.

The previous review seems to me unfair. Granted, the book talks about Dr. Joy's experiences, which are unusual (to put it mildly), but if you're going to pick-up this kind of book, you should be prepared for a description of unusual and fantastic events.

Yes, Dr. Joy is a medical doctor, who had a successful practice, until he experienced a spiritual/medical crisis that put him on a whole different and decidedly non-scientific path. This book describes that journey, as well as his relationship with his spiritual teacher, and later an "inner teacher". The book appears to be written in good faith, and makes for compelling reading (all except the last chapter, which gets a bit dry with an extended description of body-energy work).

Dr. Joy appears to be a genuine spiritual seeker, who has travelled to places, in both the inner and outer world, that most of us would be afraid to visit. Morevoer, he is a mystic with credentials: not only a medical degree, but it also appears that he organized the spiritual development conferences that are described by both M. Crichton in Travels, and J. Orloff in her first book (note, they are also both MDs).

If you want to read about one man's spiritual journey, and share in some original mystical insights (and there are many, including his description of the "spiral mediation"), then this is a good place to start. However, if you think this is going to freak you out, then please look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Leap Into Personal Growth, August 12, 2002

This review is from: Joy's Way, A Map for the Transformational Journey: An Introduction to the Potentials for Healing with Body Energies (Paperback)
I have been seeking and studying in the Personal/Spiritual Growth field for over 20 years and have explored many varied avenues. This book is written at the Intermediate level. It takes times to absorb the material and open to our own "spiritual inner voice", with honesty and unconditional love. After reading the book I was fortunate to attend Brugh's workshop and learn in more depth about chakras, the I Ching, dreamwork, and other spiritual tools. A great read, an honest and insightful teacher.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, April 7, 2001

This review is from: Joy's Way, A Map for the Transformational Journey: An Introduction to the Potentials for Healing with Body Energies (Paperback)
Mr. Joy combines a tale of his own personal spiritual journey with fairly mainstream yogic ideas concerning body energy, chakras, spiritual plane, etc. I found this book to be a very interesting read. Mr. Joy writes in a clear language that probably relates back to his training as a medical doctor. In terms of spiritual path, this book is not as "beginner" as The Celestine Prophesy.

I do not understand the views of a couple of the other reviewers here regarding the "voice" heard by Mr. Joy...a voice could be loosely interpreted as our intuition or subconscious or even a spirit guide.

Personally, I regret not having taken one of Mr. Joy's seminars; he is now on a two year sabbatical.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book of A Great Master, August 1, 2001

I read his book cos I had to go to the conferences, it was a good preparation. Probably I will get something more out of it now as I have been to his conferences and got used to his language. I didn't read the second book Avalanche until after his conference, I was very amazed much later there were a few events that were very similar in his book that I experienced myself. The book doesn't tell you about him now, at the end, it was written very long ago. If anyone who has met Brugh, you will know he is a great master and it is his job to teach. Brugh's conferences have great impacts on me and everyday, I thank god that I had the chance of meeting him. He has a lots of students that learn from him for 20 odd years, and believe me, they are great teachers themselves. When you meet him, you will know what he really wrote and why. Don't judge a book by its cover and don't judge a person by his book. His book might not be the best, but he is definitely one of the great teachers. Probably he see himself as a media and guide than a guru. He opens the door for others' spiritual path and this book is a good start.

I love this book and recommend it to others interested in healing and personal growth. Dr. Joy is a dedicated, sincere, and gifted healer and teacher. His workshops are a source of healing and inspiration for so many. I believe that the negative reviews here stem from an ignorant misunderstanding of the term "shadow", which is a Jungian term for the rejected parts of our personality, which can become toxic if not recognized and reassimilated. There is nothing at all "dark" or sinister about this book or this man. And "kundalini crisis"??? Please! Show me one and we'll talk. Please read this book and expand your healing horizons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chakra connection and spiral meditation, July 11, 2010

I wanted to read this book because it is the source for the Chakra Connection and Spiral Meditation used in Healing Touch (HT). There is lot of good information in this book for the HT student and practitioner. But, two passages in the book really stood out for me: One, Joy's accidental discovery of the energy fields, and two, the spiritual advice given to a housewife, "Make no comparisons. Make no judgments. Delete your need to understand".

I read this book back in 1984 and totally loved it. I am now rereading it after I have had to take greater responsibility for my health after an extended period of illness. Once again, I am finding it a great read, full of inspiration, and a great guidebook for healing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual healing for yourself and others, March 31, 2010

This review is from: Joy's Way, A Map for the Transformational Journey: An Introduction to the Potentials for Healing with Body Energies (Paperback)
I found this book inspiational and informative. There are many books out there today that speak of transformation and becoming aware. This book was written in the 70's but could have been written today. Brugh Joy should be ranked up there with Deepok Chopra and Ekhardt Tolle. If you are looking for another piece to the puzzle of life this is it. I was encouraged to read this by my healing touch instructor, but found it to be much more than a base for energy healing. At times it is more like a map than a guide, as it takes you on some back roads to get where you are going. Very enlightening.

My husband has loved "Joy's Way" for years. He keeps loaning copies to friends and never getting them back. Finally he has learned to keep an extra copy on hand so next time he loans it out, it won't be his "working copy."
