5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer excitement, September 4, 2001

Wild things happen when Juan Gabriel gets in front of an audience. This 2-volume video set records a high-energy performance by a man who doesn't bother with anything like inhibitions. Volume I may start out a little slow, but that all changes when the Mariachi, who are exceptional and also fun to watch, stroll onto the stage. Gabriel dances, prances, banters with the Mariachi players. He steps to the likes of an accordian that sounds more like an "Orange Blossom Special" fiddle. The videos don't follow the CD precisely. They total 180 minutes; the CDs about 100. Volume I stops about 15 minutes into the "Hasta que te conoci" medley, probably the best medley that Gabriel has done ever, that begins disc 2 of the CD set. Some of the best music on the videos that did not make the CD are on Volume I. This is Juan Gabriel in his prime and he is sensational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Greatest, June 10, 2002

This review is from: Juan Gabriel - En el Palacio de Bellas Artes Vol. 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Juan Gabriel, Mexico's Living Legend is at his best in this two part concert. YOU MUST HAVE BOTH! From his entrance to what sounds like the theme of a great matador to the last note, this is a spectacular concert. "Juanga" as he is affectionately called, has more energy than any 10 people i know. This video captures all the excitement of the live event. Theres a twenty-five minute segment where he sings "Hasta che te conoci" and as a potpurri sings about four other songs, going back and forth to "Hasta Che". A tour de force. No wonder he needs a breather for some "agua". Accompanied by a symphony orchestra, chorus and Mariachi band, this is Juanga at his best, doing some of his best songs such as "Querida" "Yo te perdono" "Yo no naci para amar" "Yo lo se que tu te vas" "No vale le pena" "Amor Eterno" and others. The audience goes wild as will anyone who sees this incredible concert. A great introduction to what Latin music is all about from the Master showman.

It is fair to say to Juan Gabriel has long paid his dues. He is at such an elevated status that a grand performance goes without saying.

Here, in El Palacio De Bellas Artes, recorded live on May 12, 1990, Juan Gabriel, is accompanied by a huge symphony orchestra, mariachi band, grand chorus and also a young boys chorus which sings along with him and they also entertain the audience with their musical instruments.

This tape set is in two volumes, and I prefer this Vol. I simply because of the length that the mariachi backs him up. With the mariachi, he sings many of his classics, which I can't identify the names of many of them. He speaks solely in Spanish.

As always, he shines! With two brilliant costume changes, he looks like the great performer he is. The tape is 90 minutes.

If you enjoy Juan Gabriel, the video and CD "Juntos Otra Vez" with Rocio Durcal is spectacular! See my review on that one.

Juan Gabriel surprised and amazed me with each song he sang. The way the videos were set up was a bit odd, but he makes up for it with the songs, mariachi's, dances, and his jokes. I hope to see him in concert when he comes close to Ohio. Definitely a great gift!
