Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

"Juba this and juba that" means putting whatever is around to eat into the same pot. Hopson has followed that practice in this collection of children's games from African cultures. She stresses that her aim is to promote an understanding of the influence of African cultures on game playing. Hopson includes outdoor, indoor, and board games, craft-making activities, activities for Kwanzaa, and, for each game, easy-to-follow instructions and its history or origin. Child psychologists have proven that the most effective way to teach a child is to turn a learning opportunity into game or "play." The author supports that point and states that one purpose of the book is as an educational tool about African cultures and influences but, more important, this collection of games will teach children social skills, physical fitness, and a sense of fairness, which probably accounts for the fact that it includes some games that did not originate in Africa. This review is from: Juba This & Juba That: 100 African-American Games for Children (Paperback)
I've loved the Juba Rhyme ever since I heard two little girls singing it outside the window of my maternity ward in Leesburg, Virginia. And this book is full of others equally delightful, equally reflective of hard times and the determination to overcome them. Excellent read-aloud book for all ages; the clapping and tapping would work well everywhere from pre-K to a a nursing home. Makes you think, speak, and enjoy. Older people may remember when this was a porch ritual--families gathered together after supper when the sun was going down and the day's labor was finished, singing and reciting and telling stories. It's a custom to bring back, and this book is a fine primer for starting--or maintaining--a pleasant activity that brings people together.
