From Publishers Weekly

Pollyanna hasn't a thing on Jubal as the Woods' (The Napping House) passable story opens, "Once upon a bright and sunny day." This chipper bullfrog, "so happy his feet barely touched the ground," has a picnic to share. But his overworked neighbor, Gerdy Toad, is too busy with her brood of "toadlets," and Dalbert Lizard, a sad, washed-up sea captain, is not in the mood. When a wizard appears to grant Jubal a wish, the hero hopes for happiness for his pals. Alas, not only do they seem more miserable than ever, but black clouds, thunder and lightning darken Jubal's sunny dayAand his spirits. Luckily the storm precedes Jubal's fulfilled wish and a predictable, happy-ever-after conclusion. The wordy text grows flowery ("A splendid feeling of wonder moved up from his toes to the tip of his nose") and electric, computer-enhanced hues illuminate rather gaudy illustrations, which include several off-putting images of the bug-eyed amphibian and reptilian characters. Ages 3-up. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-It is such a glorious day that Jubal Bullfrog asks Gerdy Toad and Captain Dalbert Lizard to join him on a picnic. However, Gerdy is too busy with her seven scalawag toadlets and "old salt" Dalbert feels too sorry for himself, so Jubal continues alone. When he wishes his friends could be happy, a wizard appears to grant his request but warns him that, when you make wishes, "You never know how they'll turn out in the end." Returning home, he is disappointed to discover that nothing has changed for Gerdy or Dalbert but a storm is brewing on the horizon. The ensuing flood washes Jubal out to sea where he is rescued by Dalbert, who has enlisted Gerdy and her toadlets to serve as crew on his trusty old boat. All agree to embark on a grand adventure and they sail off under a rainbow together. Wish fulfillment at its most basic, this tale moves along briskly with a simple story line and predictable dialogue. The narrative is overwhelmed, though, by the oversized computer-assisted illustrations; blue skies and bluer water fill each double-page spread and the very realistic amphibians and reptiles are dramatically, if statically, posed. Jubal is appealing enough, particularly when he cries huge, ploppy computer-generated tears, but his total disregard for the rising floodwaters strains credulity as does his serendipitous rescue. While perfectly designed for group sharing, young listeners might make a wish of their own for a more engrossing adventure.

More About the Author

AUDREY WOOD is the much-loved author of more than thirty books for children, including the bestselling The Napping House, Piggies, Heckedy Peg, and most recently, Piggy Pie Po, which she collaborated on with her husband, Don Wood.
She lives in Hawaii.

My first memories are of Sarasota, Florida in the winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers' Circus. I was one year old and remember it vividly. My father, an art student, was making extra income by repainting circus murals.

The people in the circus were my friends. I was bounced on the knee of the tallest man in the world and rocked in the arms of the fat lady who could not stand up. My first baby-sitters were a family of little people who lived in a trailer next to ours. They tAudrey2old me stories about the animals they worked with: Chi Chi the Chimpanzee, an elephant named Elder, and Gargantua the Gorilla.

My mother says I was a fast learner, always ahead of my age. My father taught me to swim before I could walk. I walked at seven months and climbed over a seven foot chain link fence when I was one year old. Everyone in the circus thought I was going to be a trapeze artist.

When I was two, I traveled with my parents to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where they studied art. Spanish became my second language. Because my mother read to me every day, I fell in love with books and was reading by age three.

My parents had two more girls, which made me the oldest sister. All of us were trained in the arts: music, dance, painting, and drama. We had a miniature stage in our basement, complete with light-bulb floodlights and a dusty red velvet curtain. Admission for the plays we produced was a bargain--twenty-five cents.

When I was in the first grade, I wanted to grow up to be an artist like my father. Then, in the fourth grade, I decided I'd like to be a children's book author. As an adult who writes and illustrates children's books, I have realized both my childhood ambitions.

I got in trouble in school once for crossing out my favorite author's name and putting in mine--Audrey Brewer instead of Dr. Seuss!

My great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all professional artists. Since I am also a professional artist, there are four consecutive generations of artists in our family. However, I am the only female artist.

On our honeymoon, I read my new husband Don Wood the classic children's book entitled At the Back of the North Wind. Seven years later, we teamed up to create our first picture book together.

When our son Bruce Robert was two years old, I began to read picture books to him. He helped to remind me of my childhood ambitions. That's when I began to write children's books seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars All-around pleaser, September 25, 2000

This review is from: Jubal's Wish (Hardcover)
This book tells the story of a bullfrog named Jubal whose greatest wish is that his neighbors will be as happy as he is. His ability to notice the beauty in the surrounding world sets him apart from those around who are caught up in their own troubles. However, when a storm causes a flash-flood and almost sweeps Jubal away, those same neighbors come to his rescue and discover the importance of friends and family. Don Wood's illustrations are full of brilliant color and interesting perspectives. Both the story and the illustrations work together to create a fun-to-read, sensory pleasure.

The Woods' have done it again. Another first-rate picture book. This book has a delightful story as well as captivating pictures. This book reminds its readers that sometimes wishes do come true even though you may feel like you are at your lowest point. The pictures show a lot of emotions and help the reader empathize with the characters. This would be a welcome addition to anyone's picture book collection.

I think Jubal's Wish is a very good story. The illustration is very colorful and lively. I love Audrey Wood, she is one of my favorite authors and her stories are really cool. Of all of Audrey Woods books I would have to say that Jubal's Wish is my favorite, it's a really good book.
