Book Description

April 2003
In 1792, Paris is in flames and the hungry guillotine waits . . . .

With taut writing and absorbing plot Cogan weaves the reader into the fabric of the French Revolution, one of the most chaotic and violent social upheavals of all time. Strong and resourceful heroines, an intrepid hero and a complex and terrifying nemesis are ingredients in a tale of passionate love, bright courage and dark revenge that carries the reader from the royal palace to the shadow of the guillotine.

Jubilee is an innocent young American girl in Paris with her family. One summer afternoon Jubilee’s world comes tumbling down. She is secretly in love with Jake, her father’s handsome, young business partner, and though he asks for her hand in marriage, something is wrong. That same day Jubilee’s father discovers something ugly and mysterious that involves both Jake and her father’s French business associate Edouard Larousse. That night Jubilee’s parents are murdered and she is abducted and imprisoned in a brothel. Marie, a resourceful and worldly-wise veteran of the Paris underworld, befriends Jubilee and helps her escape—but not before something even more horrifying happens that changes Jubilee’s life forever.

This review is from: Jubilee (Paperback)
by Susan Tam

Jubilee is a historical novel set in Paris during the French Revolution. Jubilee is an American living in Paris with her family. She is in love with Jake, her father's business partner and they plan to marry. On the night of her engagement, her parents are murdered and Jubilee is taken to a brothel. Jake is blamed for it but it is a ruse by Larousee, her father's French business partner. Jubilee is alone until she is befriended by Marie, a streetwise girl and they plan to escape together. Larousee's son is killed and he blames the woman who murdered him. He is driven to find the killer. Jake is grieving for his fiancée but he finds clues that point to the fact that Jubilee is not dead but very much alive. He becomes determine to find her. Will Jake be able to find Jubilee? Will Jubilee survive her imprisonment?

The setting, the characters and the plotline all fit together nicely. The characters experience pain, hope and love in this book. The reader roots for Jake, Jubilee and Marie as the story progresses. Jake searches for Jubilee. Jubilee and Marie searches for escape and some peace. Larousee searches for his son's murderer. All three are driven by their desires. The reader is drawn into the story slowly and before you know it, you want to find out what happens to the characters and how the story is resolved. The author has done an excellent job with the characterizations - the reader can empathize with the various characters. There are many twists and turns in this storyline, but it keeps the reader attention and the pages turning. The author has provided much information regarding the time period. She has done her research thoroughly and it shows! It is a well written book with memorable characters who remain in your mind even after the last page is turned. This was an excellent read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Action, Intrigue, Romance--Jubilee has it all, May 18, 2003
This review is from: Jubilee (Paperback)
What a delight-filled book with its exotic setting and costumes, strapping heroes -- and heroines. If you've ever wondered what happens to the lower echelons of the aristocracy, especially the women, in a revolution, you'll have a better idea after you've followed Jubilee, a clueless American in Paris, through her eye-opening ordeal. Jubilee is a thoroughly enjoyable blend of cloaks and daggers and romance. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.

The French Revolution sets the stage for this intriguing tale of two women during a time of violence and turmoil. Laced with romance, this well written story nevertheless has its share of excitement, and the reader is easily drawn into the lives of the people in the story. Ms. Cogan has given us a tale rich with descriptions, emotions and history. A welcome addition to anyone's library.
