A knockout!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jubilee (Audio CD)
This is a knockout album, with a wide-ranging selection of songs showcasing Rozum's beautiful singing and mandolin playing, with a stellar cast of supporting musicians (David Grier, Laurie Lewis, Todd Phillips, Darol Anger, Rob Ickes, Herb Pedersen, the much-missed Charles Sawtelle, Bobby Hicks, and more). The rendition of Merle Haggard's song, "One Sweet Hello," for example, is transformed, according to the liner notes, by "the Latino component of the Bakersfield sound with maybe a little Hawaiian thrown in." It's not as weird as it sounds -- in fact, the result is an achingly beautiful song, with resonator guitar wiz Rob Ickes showing how well that instrument can complement the human voice. Rozum's love and deep knowledge of traditional music's roots come through strongly, but the result is definitely not derivative -- of the old tunes he includes on this album, every one has been beautifully, creatively crafted into a compelling new arrangement. And it's worth the price of admission just to have his hilarious liner notes and fake ads -- there's a very droll sense of humor at work here! This album could even save you a lot of money and grief. The great song, "Love is a Lonely Street," is, according to the liner notes, "recommended listening for those contemplating yielding to temptation." After a few spins on the turntable, that one song alone could save you untold attorney's fees, not to mention time with the marriage counselor. I've played this a zillion times since I bought it, and it's going to be a big component of my holiday gift-giving. If you're my close friend, you'll be getting this for Christmas. Everybody else, buy your own copy, ASAP!

A perfect CD,
By Adele M. Lynch (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jubilee (Audio CD)
A lot of CD's get made by a lot of folks who could have saved themselves a ton of time, money and disappointment if they had first invested in a copy of Jubilee. Tom Rozum shows us that every song worth doing is worth doing well. Very well! Every single song is a beautiful blend of flawless musicianship, tight harmonies and just the right amount of expression. There is no shy introduction, no slow start--he grabs you by the lapels on the very first track with "Don't fix up the doghouse", a fast moving, tight, get up off your chair number. The second track, the title song, Jubilee, should be on the required listening list for anyone who wants to arrange music. The song starts rather starkly which serves as an invitation to listen closely to this tale of misguided ambition and lost opportunities. When Tom sings "I'd come back on her wedding day" you can hear the emotional loss in his words and the fiddle takes off on a dark frenzy that echoes this stunning truth. This is story telling through music at its' absolute finest. The rest of the CD will not disappoint. Tom's work here with Laurie Lewis, Craig Smith, Darrol Angor and a host of other top shelf musicians proves that he is among the best of the best. A great arranger, singer, musician and no slouch either when it comes to humorous liner notes. Since I first heard this CD I have bought copies for many folks. I have also encouraged other to purchase it with a promise that I will buy it back from them if they don't like it. I haven't had to buy one back yet
