The book groups sites into five main categories: the Jewish world, the Jewish year, Jewish culture, Jewish intellectual life, and current issues in Judaism. Part 1 is the largest, encompassing chapters on history, Israel, Jewish communities, the major Jewish denominations, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, genealogical resources, and leading Jewish organizations. Part 2 lists sites on the Jewish calendar, the various holidays and festivals, the Sabbath, and food and wine. The third section highlights various Jewish museums and archives, music, and art. The cultural section also includes a number of sites devoted to the preservation and enjoyment of Yiddish, including a number of literary efforts in that language.
The chapters of Part 4 cover online Jewish classes as well as classic commentary, sources of higher education, book publishers, and Jewish newspapers and magazines as well as direct-from-the-Net news sources. The final section presents Net sites pertaining to Jewish medical ethics, divorce, and domestic abuse and feminism. Surprisingly, there is no section dedicated to humor per se, but humor-related sites are worked throughout the various subtopics. The Dry Bones site, for example, is home to Israel's leading satiric political cartoon strip. And the Gefilte Fish Story site provides humorous information on this particular beast of the sea. The publisher also offers a Web site of its own, offering hot links to all the sites noted in the book. --Elizabeth Lewis
