Jude the Obscure has been a powerful and controversial novel from its first publication in 1895 to the present. At different times, it has been seen as an affront to sexual morality, a radical assault on British social institutions, a pioneering work of feminism and a fiercely committed socialist polemic. Its unsettling parable of defeated rebellion continues to draw attention. This collection brings together some of the most interesting and challenging studies of Jude the Obscure of the last fifteen years which revitalize Hardy studies through new critical theories.
