This is without a doubt the best soundtrack I own! I've had it for a number of years now and it still gets more play-time than any other. Adrian Johnston's masterpiece is hauntingly beautiful.

From the first lingering note to it's conclusion, Adrian's music will effect you like no other. This soundtrack is worthy of all the praise it has received over the past years by everyone who has had the priveledge to hear it.

Like other reviewers have already stated, if you are not crying your eyes out by the end of this soundtrack, then you better start questioning your humanity!

Although this has no bearing on the quality of his music or does not bias my opinion of the soundtrack, I can't finish without mentioning that I know Adrian Johnston and he is perhaps one of the nicest people I have ever met. Thanks again Adrian for your help, you are a true gentleman.

This CD is truly amazing. It captures the essence of the film remarkably. It has everything from the softest of violin solos to the most soul raising choir ensembles. It is also so unique, and has so much range, that you can put it on repeat for eternity and not get tired or bored. If you have seen the film, this CD is a must-have. It takes you right back to Sue and Jude, and their struggles against society's conventions, and will take you on an emotional journey. From Jude's early days dreaming of Christminster to him first laying his eyes upon the beautiful and strong willed Sue Bridehead all the way through the film to the devastating end. Kudos to Adrian Johnston for composing such a wonderful, brilliant, masterful and beautiful work of musical art. Highly Recommended.

So many years from the release of the movie(1996) and this soundtrack still makes me fell sad and at the same time... happy .It's great music not for these days , of hip-hop and Rap , it's for the human spirit to may touch the clouds above and talk to god, it's a prison...it's a freedom....it's a cry... it's a shout....How many people know that? Please watch the movie and i 'm sure you will note this score...

It took me almost a month to be able to listen to this soundtrack without a box of kleenex. Now, this cd rarely leaves my stereo. From the desparately lonely opening strings to the echoing notes at the end, the cd is absolutely perfect. I am constantly waiting word of another Adrian Johnston work.

No word in the dictionary than describe to all of the people reading this what I am feeling right know about this soundtrack, the film, and the book! All of them where brilliant! Kate & Chris where wonderful in this film. And Thomas, Damn you know how to wright! I have read all of his books and they are wonderful. He is as great as Shakespeare (but not that great, remember Sheakespeare is a master piece). I am 13 years old and all of this is just too wonderful, too much! As I said, I'm speechless! Nothing can describe what I'm feeling!

It's clear that James Horner listened to this soundtrack before composing his megagazillion-selling TITANIC score. This score is a noticeable, but not in the least distracting, backdrop to the film JUDE, and holds up beautifully on its own. If you aren't crying your guts out after listening to this, you just ain't human...but you'll love every second of it. There's not a weak track here. Like the film, this CD will rip your soul right out of your body and stomp on it. Hard. For a long time.

This has to be the best CD I own. I am a fourteen year old that watches MTV and I still love this soundtrack. It fits my favorite movie Jude perfectly with the beautiful and touching music. Like the movie, it rips your heart out.

This is an amazing CD! If you have read the book ar seen the movie, you ache with the emotions expressed musically in it. It is beautifully and thoughtfully composed, rich in artistic splendor and appeal. The way the sections of music are seperated by the portions of the book add to the appeal as well. The music is living and breathing, a wonderful instrumental collection.

yesterday, for the first time i watched the movie and today i am hunting for the soundtrack...it's a must-have for any music lover, especially those who prefer the sad ethos blended with a soul-stirring rendition of human emotion. Marvellous! it touches you and moves you in incredible ways...evokes nostalgia, a feeling of bein absorbed in the screenplay, taking you into a flight of imagination where one seems to be playing the characters of the movie itself. Wonderful composition.

I listened to this soundtrack before I'd read the book or seen the film, and like few soundtracks - or albums altogether - it captured my imagination and emotions completely. The composer manages to create a world with few, comparably simple but earnest melodies. Shortly after - not least because of this soundtrack - I bought Thomas Hardy's "Jude the Obscure", and I would say it is one of my favourite books. The world portrayed by Hardy is bleak, probably even depressing, but despite all that it is not devoid of love. As corny as it might sound, this is exactly what I got from the soundtrack - Johnson might not manage to capture Hardy's morbid irony that veers dangerously close to cynicism, but he finds the right tone, I think, to convey Hardy's genuine feelings for his characters. (Sadly, I think the movie had the right ideas, but was not very well told - it didn't touch me nearly as much as the music or the novel.) Then why only 4 stars? "Jude" suffers from what I'd call 'Soundtrack illness'. It has a handful of brilliant tracks, but after a while the themes get repetitive. Surely not to the extent of your usual Michael Nyman score, for instance, but there is not enough variety especially in the latter tracks. While this might be okay for the film, in an album it's a bit of a disadvantage...
