5.0 out of 5 stars Superb comic classics, Judge Dredd's first mega epics! November 30, 2010
By Ian Zam
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This right here is an essential comic volume. Conveniently this Judge Dredd collection starts out with the first Dredd epic, The Cursed Earth. Dredd has to trek across this savage wasteland and face all sorts of crazy menaces, to save Mega City 2! Even better, right after this leads into the second Dredd epic, The Day The Law Died, where Mega City One has it's own problems. These are some of my early favorites, and when Dredd really started to rock. There's also room for a couple stand alone tales at the end of the book, including the classic Punks Rule.

Wagner, Mills, Bolland, McMahon and friends giving us some great fun stuff, some of the best of the late 70s. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dredd goes EPIC February 6, 2011
Format:Paperback
The first volume of Judge Dredd's complete case files was a bit hit or miss since it was a collection of early 8 page strips that were usually more parody-oriented. But with Vol 2 things really click. First Dredd has an epic multi-part journey through the Cursed Earth, fighting off mutants and monsters to deliver a vital vaccine. But he gets no rest since upon his return he had another multi-part epic where the mad Judge Cal turns Mega City One into his own insane police state.

These were some of the first Dredd stories I read and they hold up. There's a few plot holes (why not fly over the Cursed Earth and land near the plague-infested Mega City 2) and some chapters had to left out for copyright reasons (the introduction summarized them though) but these are mostly straight up action stories and still work today.

The black and white reproduction is crisp throughout, a few pages look like they were originally published in color and look a little muddy. But these are minor quibbles.

For $20 you get over 300 pages of classic British comics, there aren't many better buys in comics today.

5.0 out of 5 stars In this volume, the writers begin to hit their stride November 19, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 2" is the second sequential volume starring "Judge Dredd", the venerable English comic book hero, who has been in print, in one form or another, for well over 30 years. For the most part the series is set in the future in Mega City 1 (nominally New York City and the a portion of eastern seaboard). Judge Dredd is the most well-known (and most feared) of the Street Judges, lawmen who are empowered to arrest, judge, and sentence anyone they find guilty of a crime. Each story runs to a maximum of about 8 pages (due to the fact that they originally ran in a weekly science fiction anthology), but in this volume, most of the short stories are linked into larger, broader story arcs.

In fact, most the book is taken up by two large arcs, "Cursed Earth", where Dredd has to go cross the continental former United States to deliver some life-saving serum to Mega City 2, and "The Day the Law Died", where a meglomaniac judge usurps control of Mega City 1, and Judge Dredd has to restore law and order. The stories, while still somewhat heavy-handed and simplistic at times, show clear improvement over volume 1, as the writers more comfortably flesh out the character of Judge Dredd and his world. While volume 1 was entertaining in its own right, volume 2 is much better and much more representative of Dredd and his world.

As I also noted in my review of vlume 1, Judge Dredd is often not likeable, but his moral compass for right and wrong is unwavering, and at times, it's intentionally too unwavering. The tales have humor, pathos, irony, and a lot of action. If you're a Judge Dredd fan, this collection should be on your bookshelf. Five stars.
