5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically surprising game! Awesome, if a little short..., October 29, 2005

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death (Windows) (Video Game)
I bought this game because the "kid who used to love everything FPS" in me got it because, guess what, it's an FPS (first person shooter). I heard mixed reviews about the game, and I only saw a few screenshots, so I honestly didn't know what to expect, but I saw no harm in buying it especially since I got it for such a great low price...

I loaded it up, and I was wowed by the graphic detail. For a 2003 game, it looks impressive. The texture detail is really great, the models are great, and the atmosphere is unique. Being a Rebellion game, the engine immediately feels like a revamped and seriously updated version of the original AvP engine, but it really works. This is the second game that I've played that came out around the time of Halo which features a shield that depletes and recharges, and if the shield's gone that's when you start to lose health (the first game was Mace Griffin that I played and finished a couple weeks ago). Sound is great, and Judge Dredd's lines are forgivably cheesy. :) The weapons are really beefy, I really enjoy firing the weapons in this game, especially the Machine gun and Shotgun (which by the way feels a lot like Doom 3's shotgun in terms of punch). The enemy AI is good, the levels are HUGE, and the bosses are somewhat challenging (quite easy in my opinion, but perhaps because I'm an FPS veteran I'd find things easy). There is some great lighting in this game, dark levels that are really atmospheric. They're not on the pixel shader level of Doom3's lighting, but the dark corridors and the Imp-like Vampires jumping out at you scared me a few times...

I just finished the game this morning, and while it didn't take me long (if you were to play this game from start to finish in one session it will take you between 10 - 12 hours first go, and about 8 hours when you know what you're doing) but I've really enjoyed the ride! What's more, there are LOADS of extras that you unlock depending on your performance per level. The Arcade Mode has you facing different challenges, so replayability is high in this game (not to mention you unlock the game's cheats in Arcade mode). The multiplayer is awesome, and the 2 player co-op game is amazing, on par with Serious Sam Co-Op.

I'd definitely give this at least an 8.5/10. If you guys have some spare time and cash, give this FPS a try, it's really a lot of fun!

3.0 out of 5 stars It lasts 4 four hours and that's okay., June 4, 2007
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death (Windows) (Video Game)
It took about 4 hours to complete this game on the easy setting. I found the graphics quite good, especially if the advanced options are set to the max. Since it is a 4 year old game, present day computers have no problems with that.

You only get to carry 2 weapons at the same time. I mostly used the Lawgiver. It is a "do-it-all" gun with multiple kinds of ammo like armor piercing and incendiary. The enemy is subpar though. You get to kill undead, vampires and death cultists and their only strategy is to rush you or shoot you in plain sight. They are cannon fodder. I expected a little more from the bosses. Of the four of them, you defeat three without firing a single shot. That was disapointing.

The levels are big and there is some semblance of choice to get to the final objective but it is pretty linear. For the 4 hours that the game lasted, it was fun but I felt a little bored at the end.
