Forced to Judge...,
By Naiomi Pitre "Author of BROKEN VOWS and IN TH... (Baton Rouge, LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Judge Not! (Paperback)
Judge Not! by Audrey Forrest Carter was an unexpected disappointment. The blurb on the back of the book was very enticing and sufficiently lured me into the book. I may have been able to get past the bland cover if the story would have delivered what the blurb had promised, however, this was not to be the case.
Dr. Laura Bradley-Hutchins returns to Atlanta to retrieve her children from her millionaire ex-husband, Alex, who has apparently performed a number of atrocities against her - including falsely having her committed to a mental institution and keeping her from seeing her kids for ten years. The cast of characters includes Laura's best friend, Marseille, who allows her to stay in her lavish town home free of charge during her stay and helps her to seek revenge against Alex. By reading the author's bio on the back cover, readers will discover that she is an accomplished woman with a PhD who has won `numerous teaching and literary awards'. This is contrary to the fact that the book presents many grammatical and spelling mistakes throughout the novel. I found myself dismayed that this well-known teacher would publish an unedited book with so many errors to distract the reader from the storyline. Perhaps if I had been previous fan of Forrest Carter's work and read the prequel to Judge Not!, entitled The Wages Of Sin, I may have had a stronger emotional investment in the characters of this novel. Granted, when writing a sequel, it is often a difficult task to write for your established fans as well as new readers. However, I am doubtful that reading the first book would have explained to me how Laura Bradley-Hutchins could spend two full novels hating her ex-husband and wishing him dead, and somehow miraculously not only forgive him, but offer up her kidney to save his life and... and... (let's not forget the clincher here, folks) AND she agrees to remarry him while he is laid up in the hospital, recovering from a massive beat down that her best friend arranged with her consent. If I had been a fan up to that point, Ms. Forrest Carter would have lost me there for sure.

"Judge Not delivers an awesome story about deceit, revenge and forgiveness."
"Judge Not is the sequel to The Wages Of Sin. This dramatic story picks up with Laura Bradley Hutchins' plan to return to reclaim her children Ryan and Reason, who she has been separated from for the past ten years." "Laura is out for revenge from her husband Alex Hutchins, who is a prominent businessman. Alex was unfaithful during their marriage. When Laura caught him committing adultery, he plotted a scheme that sent her to a mental institution and caused damage to her life." "With the help of her wealthy best friend Marseille Cooper and several others, Laura is able to reunite with her children and inform them of the length their father went to in order to get rid of her. When the truth is revealed two unexpected deaths occur and lives are changed." "Laura receives some answers from a family member that changes her perspective on her father and brother. She will also be faced with a difficult decision. Should she continue to seek revenge or should she forgive the one who betrayed her." "This page turner offers an interesting story that readers will find unforgettable." |
