Garland front and center--with some of her best contemporaries,
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Judy Garland - Duets / Mel Torme, Bobby Darin, Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett (DVD)
Judy Garland Duets gives us some of the greatest duets ever recorded on film. We see the incomparable Judy Garland and her guest stars from her weekly television series perform stunning duets that leave you breathless. The quality of the film exceeds my expectations and the sound is perfect.
Many gifted artists work with Judy on this DVD. Judy performs with Mel Torme as they do a routine that includes "The Trolley Song" from Meet Me In Saint Louis; and Judy does an extended routine with Bobby Darin as well. Judy and Bobby Darin perform on a set intended to resemble a passenger car on a train; they sing songs including "Sentimental Journey;" "On The Atchison, Topeka And The Santa Fe" from The Harvey Girls and "Some Of These Days." Awesome! Look for Judy to do a plug for what was then CBS's annual television presentation of The Wizard Of Oz. Lena Horna and Judy sing parts of "Day In, Day Out" and "Come Rain Or Come Shine." In addition, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand sing wonderfully together; they perform "Hooray For Love" and later on in the show they sing a "Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy" medley. Sublime! Judy also sings an electric medley with Ethel Merman including "It's Delovely" and parts of "Together Wherever We Go;" and Judy joins Tony Bennett on the end of his classic "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." Judy Garland's chemistry with Tony Bennett is nothing short of magical. Of course, so much more material comes out at you it makes this DVD a real treasure. Judy and her daughter Liza Minnelli do a fine duet of songs including "The Best Is Yet To Come;" and the flawless song and dance routine by Judy with Mickey Rooney stuns you, too. Overall, this DVD of timeless and classic duets is a must have for Garland fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will also cherish this DVD. There will never be another Judy Garland; and these duets between Judy and just a few of her contemporaries gives us what is easily a five plus star DVD of unparalleled performances.

west side story fans,
By Paul Archer (Atlanta, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Judy Garland - Duets / Mel Torme, Bobby Darin, Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett (DVD)
toward the end of this show there is a West Side Story medley with Vic Damone. I didn't even know it existed. You haven't heard "Somewhere" or "Tonight" until you've heard them sung by Judy Garland. At the end she goes for a couple of high notes (very unusual for her) and nails them, but it's such a stretch that she ducks behind him.
mind-boggling.

I loved this DVD. I was very young when this was on TV and I am grateful for the oppertunity to see it again. I especially enjoyed the Barbra Sriesand clips and the Bobby Darin clip. The sound is very good and the picture excellent. I would recommend this DVD for any Judy Garland fan.
