Vintage Judy,

This review is from: Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow: 24 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Dutch label DISKY has assembled one terrific and comprehensive collection of Judy Garland songs-- many are original film soundtracks, and every single one of these songs is Judy Garland at her finest. Judy appears here with among others, the Victor Young and David Rose orchestras; she duets with Gene Kelly {"For Me And My Gal," "When You Wore A Tulip") and Bing Crosby ("Mine"). "Bidin' My Time," with harmonca and chorus, is a particular highlight. The title number, "Over The Rainbow," isn't from the WIZARD OF OZ soundtrack, but it is surely contemporary with that 1939 film.
Sound quality is good, considering the source material-- not hi-fi. No liner notes. JUDY GARLAND OVER THE RAINBOW belongs in every fan's collection. TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 72:35

This review is from: Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow: 24 Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow: 24 Greatest Hits showcases the exceptionally talented artistry of the immortal Judy Garland. Judy could take any song and make it into the sweetest ballad you had ever heard; and she could deliver not only songs that would break your heart but even upbeat, marching types of tunes as well. When Judy Garland sang you listened--and you listened closely, too, because you knew you were hearing a true genius at work. This CD has songs which are from Judy's earlier years in show business at MGM Studios; while this is therefore not a comprehensive collection it does have quite a bit of very high quality, wonderful music here. In addition, the quality of the sound on the CD itself is really rather good considering the age of these recordings; and I like that artwork, too.
The album begins with Judy singing "The Trolley Song" from Meet Me In Saint Louis. This probably isn't from the movie soundtrack; Judy recorded slightly different versions of their tunes on the Decca label. "Dear Mr. Gable: You Made Me Love You" absolutely charms me with its timeless beauty; and that's grand. Judy's voice never sounded better--except when she sang "Over The Rainbow" for the soundtrack to the movie The Wizard Of Oz. In addition, we also get "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart;" this slower tempo version works well and Judy aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing. "For Me And My Gal" comes from the MGM movie of the same name; and Judy's performance stuns me with its brilliance. Judy sings this with all her heart and soul and she never skips a beat. She's quite the champ! "I'm Nobody's Baby" is another tune from Judy's earlier years at MGM; I always liked this number--just one listen will tell you why! "But Not For Me" comes from the movie Girl Crazy; and Judy performs this with so much panache I'm amazed. Wonderful! "But Not For Me" also has fine music that fits in perfectly with Judy's vocals. "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" was sung by many an artist, but Judy Garland's rendition reigns supreme in my book. Her voice was meant to sing ballads like this. "When You Wore A Tulip" is very pretty; Judy sings this marvelously and "When You Wore A Tulip" is yet another highlight of this album. "The Boy Next Door" comes from Meet Me In Saint Louis; and Judy delivers this faultlessly. "The Boy Next Door" features Judy in her natural element as you can hear when you listen to this track. She sings this with so much passion and skill I recommend any emerging artist to study ballads like this. Moreover, "It's a Great Day for the Irish" from Little Nellie Kelly couldn't be better; Judy sings this with a great deal of positive energy. "Buds Won't Bud" has an elegant musical arrangement that accompanies Judy without ever stealing the show away from her; and I really like "You'll Never Walk Alone." "You'll Never Walk Alone" is another charmer; and the CD ends strong with Judy Garland performing an alternate version of "Over The Rainbow" that was recorded for 78rpm records. This is not the soundtrack recording of "Over The Rainbow" but it still impresses nonetheless. Judy Garland could never be forgotten; to this day they are planning a second biopic about her and even a Broadway show. Judy's talent was one in a trillion and I highly recommend this CD--let's hope it comes back into print soon!
