What a Collector's Dream!,

This review is from: Judy That's Entertainment / I Could Go on Singing (Audio CD)
If you ever wanted to hear Judy Garland at her Absolute Mature Vocal Best, then be sure that you hear the first Album on this CD entitled, "That's Entertainment" Every Song on this first Album is done with pure perfection and great emotional feelings! Nobody could sing the song, "That's Entertainment" better than Judy Garland!! With her brilliantly flawless precise talk singing for this particular song, combined with her Greatly Powerful Vibrato on the extended notes of this Great Showbiz Tune, Judy makes this "That's Entertainment" number her very own, creating an unforgetable listening experience!!! And then the Jazzy Tune that follows which is entitled, "Who Cares?" is another Treat to the Ears! It's very rare to hear Judy singing Jazz in her later years, but in this particular song, she does a Tremendous Job of it, and sounds like she is having such a Grand Time doing it too!!The Very Romantic Songs included on the first Album, are done with such a depth of emotion from this Artist Judy Garland, that you feel she is actually living the songs!! Especially the Songs like, "If I Love Again" accompanied wonderfully by a Soft Guitar which allows the listener to hear the beautiful and perfect 'bird like quality' in Garland's Terrific Voice!! Other Greatly Performed Romantic Numbers include a very rare song entitled, "Yes" which almost had me in tears near the end of this number. And also the song entitled, "It Never Was You" Accompanied only with a piano which once again revealed the rich and moving tone quality of Garland's Lovely Voice!! Another song to take notice of, is her hauntingly more widely known romantic song entitled, "Alone Together" which was done with utter perfection! And the more rousing romantic song number she does just before this entitled, "Just You, Just Me" is done in a Charmingly Flirtatious Fashion. It's Great!! Now we come to the second part of this Great CD, which consists of the soundtracks from the movie Judy Garland did in England entitled, "I Could Go On Singing" Among my favorite songs included on this Particular Album are "Hello Blue Bird" which Judy sings in a delightfully almost childlike way if you will, with a devastatingly powerful ending that is Quite Exciting!! Another favorite of mine is a track selected by Capital Records which Judy does another version of the song, "It Never Was You" which was also heard previously in the first Album of this CD. But this time, this same song number is done more informally with even some Studio Background Moving Camera Noises included since this song was recorded live during the filming of the movie, "I Could Go On Singing" instead of being Pre-recorded in a Closed Recording Studio. So Judy sang this song on a live Sound Stage for a Dramatic Effect, and once again only accompanied by a piano! What a Great Vocal Emotional Result this live Singing proved to be, since the singing of this song, "It Never Was You" is so very personal sounding, with Judy singing it live like this-on a Film Set! Another Great Song Number included in this Movie Soundtrack Album from the movie, "I Could Go On Singing" is Judy's Popular Song entitled, "By Myself" In my opinion, this is the best recording of this song ever!!! I say this because not only does Judy Garland herself give a Great Emotional Artistic Interpretation of this song, but the orchestra accompaning her in this number, is Absolutely Fantastic to say the very least!!! Both of these Albums which are included on this One CD, are a must for any serious Judy Garland Collector! You will definitely not be wasting your money in the purchasing of this CD which does consist of Purely Outstanding Judy Garland Treasures...

This Woman knows how to deliver a song, and these two Great Albums prove this fact! Two incredible Judy Garland Albums on a Single CD! The First Album done in 1960 has Judy Singing upbeat songs as well as slow ballads, and no matter if she sings a swinging number or a serious love song, Judy can't lose because her Vocal Tone and Range are always unforgetable!! The Second Album are Sound Track Recordings from her 1962 Movie-"I Could Go On Singing" Even though Judy's voice sounds somewhat different from her vocals in the first album on this CD, she nevertheless gives-absolutely Incredible Performances on this Soundtrack Album with a great emotional impact that will thrill the listener to no end! Judy Garland is a one of a kind performer, and these two Powerful Albums that are placed on a Single CD, prove this beyond any shadow of a doubt whatsoever!!! Buy this CD, and see why Judy Garland was so rightfully given the honor of being named, "World's Greatest Entertainer!"

Thank God for Collectables Records. It's about time Judy's original LP's were put on CD. In the past Capitol Records have put afew of Judy's LP's on CD. The bad thing is they sell out fast, and are hard to find. These collections are GREAT! Quality sound and liner notes. A must have for JUDY FANS.

It is nice to hear these albums again all cleaned up with such great sound. I expected a bit more from the restoration on the I Could Go On Singing soundtrack portion of the cd. However, it is still good and is head and shoulders above anything I have heard on any of the compilation discs when they have used one of the tracks. I really enjoyed this cd.

I bought this album just to have I Could Go On Singing soundtrack and beleive me it is worth buying. The first part of the album, although some great numbers isn't a patch on I Could Go On Singing. As far as I know this movie was called The Lonely stage when released in America but it the UK it was Called I Could Go On Singing. If you've seen the movie, after the first number she builds up to going on stage to sing Hello Bluebird, An amazing number by the end of the number I'm sitting there with a great big grin on my face thinking nobody can do it like Judy. There is a rare bit of Judy singing Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore with school kids, charming. I'll go my way by myself has to be the ultimate Garland song, she puts every emotion into this number, it will give you a lump in your throat listening to it. I read from the liner notes that the movie is now out of print, hopefully it will be released on DVD SOON. If you haven't seen the movie buy this CD it is Judy's Last soundtrack recording and is worth having

A DOUBLE TOUR-DE-FORCE BY JUDY GARLAND,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Judy That's Entertainment / I Could Go on Singing (Audio CD)
"That's Entertainment!" is definitely an appropriate description for this superb double-bill by Judy Garland. Here are two classic Garland albums together on one CD."That's Entertainment", recorded in June, 1960 (immediately before and immediately after Judy's 38th Birthday) finds Judy in excellent voice. Judy became deathly ill in 1959. So, she took the latter half of 1959 and the first half of 1960 off to rest and recooperate. The results were nothing short of miraculous. Judy would reprise half of the songs on "That's Entertainment" during her historic live concert at Carnegie Hall ten months later. But on this album, under the supervision of conductor Jack Marshall, Judy takes these same numbers at a slightly slower, more relaxed tempo. In addition, Judy's renditions of "I've Confessed To The Breeze", "If I Love Again", "Old Devil Moon" and "It Never You" are magical. Andre Previn's "Yes" provided the most delightful surprise of all; as I had never heard Judy sing this song before. My brother gave me the Soundtrack Album (on vinyl) of Judy's final film "I Could Go On Singing" (1963) for my 10th Birthday. I'm ashamed to say, at age 10, I did not properly appreciate it; as I clearly was not ready for the "adult Judy Garland." I'm glad to finally have it again on CD. Art reflected life in some very strange ways during "I Could Go On Singing." In the film, Judy plays Jenny Bowman, an international star who comes to England to fight her ex-lover (Dirk Bogarde) for custody of their now 14 year old son Matt (Gregory Phillips) she left behind shortly after birth. Simultaneously, in real life, Judy was fighting estranged husband Sid Luft for custody of their children Lorna and Joe Luft. Lorna and Joe appear briefly in the film; sitting directly behind Judy and her "movie son" Gregory Phillips on a ferry boat ride. Judy responded to all the on-screen/off-screen similarities by giving one of her most intense performances; both musically and dramatically. Appropriately enough, the music, supervised by Saul Chaplin and Judy's best conductor Mort Lindsey, reflects the emotional range of Judy herself; from the manic euphoria of "Hello, Bluebird" to the lonely, cynical moodiness of "By Myself." "It Never Was You" is re-visited here; captured as an emotionally raw performance, recorded live on set; with just Judy and a piano. The title song provides Judy and the film with a smile-through-your-tears finale that will knock your socks off. Liner notes are provided by late, great Judy fan Scott Schechter. Rest in Peace, Dear Judy and Scott. You are both loved and missed very much.

Two classic albums from Judy Garland's days with Capitol Records - 'That's Entertainment', and the soundtrack from 'I Could Go on Singing'.In 1959, Garland was struck down with a strain of hepatitis. Forced to take time off from her hectic recording and concert schedule, she returned the following year in peak vocal form to record 'That's Entertainment', her sixth studio album for the Capitol label. No other Garland album is as pristinely-good as this one. Her voice is lush and plush, her delivery excellent and you can simply tell she's having a ball. "Old Devil Moon", "Yes", "Alone Together" and a snappy jazz arrangement of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" are only a few highlights. Most of the hardcore Garland fans would single out this as their favourite Garland record. I Could Go On Singing, released in 1963, would prove to be Garland's final movie. The story revolves around a famous singer called Jenny Bowman. Whilst in the middle of a series of London concert dates, she decides to meet the son she gave away shortly after birth. The film itself featured Garland giving a superb acting performance, and although her voice was a little threadbare, the raw emotional power she gave to the musical numbers was outstanding. The soundtrack album from the film acutely displays Garland's vocal shortcomings, but the singular way she tackles "By Myself" turns the song into a dramatic monologue. Likewise Kurt Weill's "It Never Was You" becomes a plaintive cry from a heartbroken mother. "Hello Bluebird" builds to a big-belting conclusion, and "Monarch of the Sea" (lifted from Gilbert & Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore") is a joyous 'impromptu' moment with Garland and the children from the film. There is however, a misprint on the CD cover (and Amazon's track-listing): the Overture Medley isn't the same one used for Garland's concerts. It's the one that is heard in the movie (with "By Myself", "Hello Bluebird", "It Never Was You", and "I Could Go on Singing"). Garland fans will certainly enjoy this CD, in particular for the I COULD GO ON SINGING soundtrack (making it's CD premiere with this release). [Collectables 2839]

Judy Garland will remain the world's greatest entertainer for ages to come. In fact, I doubt we'll ever see another quite like her. Judy was able to lead her adoring audiences wherever she wanted them to go; and the chemistry between her and her followers was magical. This "two-fer" CD gives us insight as to why.I call this a "two-fer" CD because it contains all the tracks from two of Judy's record albums entitled That's Entertainment and I Could Go On Singing with music from the movie of the same name. Excellent! The CD track set begins with the twelve numbers from That's Entertainment; we start with Judy singing "That's Entertainment." Judy's voice never sounded better; and the percussion along with the horns and the strings enhance the beauty of this number. Judy sings "That's Entertainment" with such gusto that you know she can tackle anything. Wow! "Who Cares? (As Long As You Care For Me)" gives us a somewhat jazzier number; Judy delivers this without a superfluous note--great! The musical arrangement glows like gold but it leaves Judy's voice front and center. "Puttin' On The Ritz" starts with a great saxophone flourish and when Judy comes in she really takes flight! The tempo changes serve to enhance the number and Judy's voice truly acts as its own instrument to go hand in hand with the music. I predict that you will enjoy "Puttin' On The Ritz" very, very much. "Down With Love" showcases Judy's voice yet again as the horns embellish this number; and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" gets the royal treatment from Judy and the musicians as they perform this with just a few changes to make this number belong just to Judy and Judy alone! The pretty melody belies the sadness of the lyrics of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" In addition, "Just You, Just Me" sports a jazzier than usual flavor and Judy never misses a beat--great! The last nine tracks on this album come from the record album and the movie entitled I Could Go On Singing. The movie soundtrack of Judy performing an abridged version of "I Could Go On Singin' (Till The Cows Come Home)" truly is a masterpiece Judy gives to us as a gift; Judy delivers this flawlessly with passion, soul and a panache that I rarely hear and enjoy. Love those horns on "I Could Go On Singin'!" "Hello Bluebird" features Judy at the top of her game yet again; "Hello Bluebird" seems fresh and new as you listen to Judy sing it. Judy was THAT good--she could make any song sound fresh and new with her remarkably sensitive, careful interpretations of classic ballads. "I Am The Monarch Of The Sea" comes from the soundtrack of I Could Go On Singing; Judy sings so well with these children. Moreover, "By Myself" showcases Judy's sublime rendition of this melancholy ballad; and the musical arrangement supports Judy very well. Judy handles the tempo changes as only a pro can and she makes "By Myself" all her own by singing this number with great sensitivity and panache. There are two instrumental tracks from I Could Go On Singing; and the final track ends the album fittingly with another, complete rendition of "I Could Go On Singin' (Till The Cows Come Home)." Judy adds a great intro for this finale; and she leaves you wanting more just as her adoring audiences always wanted more when her concerts ended. The liner notes include an informative essay by Scott Schechter; and we get the original liner notes from both record albums, too. The artwork reflects great judgment. Judy Garland lives on despite the passage of time because you just can't keep classic performances like this stored away in a storage shed gathering dust. Judy pours her heart and soul into these great performances; and I predict that the world will enjoy Judy's singularly beautiful talent for ages to come. |
