"JUG BAND EXTRAVAGANZA"
(Folk Era, 2010)
----------------------------------------
A deliriously fun all-star summit meeting in celebration of jug band music, its early 20th Century origins and giddy revival during the early years of the 1960's folk scene. Onstage are luminaries such as Jim Kweskin, Geoff and Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian and mandolinist David Grisman, all of whom were in early jug bands, and all of whom play with great energy, enthusiasm, and affection for the bluesy music of their youth. Sebastian -- formerly of the Lovin' Spoonful, who cannily transformed jug band music into psychedelicized Top Forty pop -- acts as the frontman and MC for the show, although everyone takes turns in the spotlight. This concert (which I wish I'd gone to!) was the brainchild of filmmaker Todd Kwait, who got the jug band bug and looked up the biggest stars of the genre, in order to make a (fun, fascinating) documentary about the music and its history, called "Chasin' Gus' Ghost." One focus of his explorations was 1920s bandleader Gus Cannon, who recorded an early version of the song "Walk Right In," which decades later became a huge pop hit for the Rooftop Singers, back in 1963. Cannon is a legendary figure among jug band connoisseurs, and the saltiness and good humor of his music echoes in these knowing, playful performances of standards such as "Stealin'," "Wild Ox Moan" and "Gee, Baby Ain't I Good To You." If you're halfway tempted, go ahead and dive in -- both the movie and the album are a delight. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)

As someone who has collected most everything available in the jug band field from the old Gus Cannon and Memphis Jug Band stuff through the J Band,Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur and the sadly unheralded South Memphis String Band, I would have to say this is the best single Jug Band CD out there. If you only buy one to represent this genre, get this and immediately. If you don't enbjoy this, there is something wrong with you. The playing by David Grisman, John Sebastian and Jim Kweskin is mesmerizing and the vocals, especially Geoff Muldaur and also former wife Maria are exemplary.

I was fortunate enough to attend this whole event- earlier as a musician with one of the bands (the Tarantulas) at Golden Gate Park, and later at the film "Chasin' Gus' Ghost," and then at this great show recorded here. I've been waiting for this CD to come out so I could have the memory of a really wonderful night. It was pretty amazing. The mayor had issued a Proclamation making it "Jug Band Weekend" in San Francisco, and the turn-out at each event was incredible. Jim Kweskin came and watched a bunch of us play.

This recording is good, and while it conveys the feeling and the depth of sound as we heard it then, it would be tough to get all the emotion across. Jim Kweskin was great--Geoff Muldaur's voice is incredible, John Sebastian is one of the greatest harp players on this earth, David Grisman kicks ass, Maria Muldaur was in exquisite voice.

In addition to the GREATS who attended were the gentlemen of the Barbecue Orchestra, who served as something of a "house band."
They are Jon "Doc" Stein, Peter "Spud" Siegel, Stew Dodge and Kenneth "Turtle" VanDeMarr (of Dan Hicks and Christmas Jug Band fame,) from Portland, Oregon. This was especially sweet for me, having spent many years on the Coast of Oregon listening to Spud and Turtle in various bands. )I'm still listening to the CD, so I don't know if the recording reflects that Dan Hicks appeared as a special guest- but play he did and it was cool.)

Of course the place was packed, and it was packed MOSTLY with jug band musicians.
I really enjoyed hearing "Blues My Naughty Sweety Gives To Me." We do it ourselves- as I'm sure many of the other folks- and we really sang along well.

Whatever this album might mean to me and the rest of us who were there- it remains an excellent compilation of real jug songs songs and the finest artists that ever played the form...

It is a fact, a known historical fact, maybe unnoted in the schoolboy history books but a fact nevertheless, that jug music was invented in 1961, make that the night of October 23, 1961, in the cellars of 47 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139. And that invention was made by one Fitz-Hugh Montgomery, previously a graduate student in anthropology at Harvard University, and just then, well, just then between things, and working as a dishwasher/general roustabout at the establishment located above those cellars. That night he stumbled upon this world-historic fact- the empty apple cider jugs piling up down there having previously been emptied into folk coffee mugs and awaiting salvation in next trash pick-up made sounds when the cellar windows were opened and the wind was able to reach their small mouths. Made to one Fitz-Hugh Montgomery's ear music. Serious new wave- breaking music.

Now like all great inventions this was not sheer accident because, as fate would have it, Fitz-Hugh had been fretting over the problem of the wasteland of the contemporary music scene since he dropped out of that anthropology program to seek a newer world, a world as an easy rider cosmic biker in this wicked old universe (Harley, naturally, not some old British import like a Vincent Black Lightning, Christ no).

He fretted over the choices, the dish-water choices (no pun intended), that he heard wherever he turned musically. Stuff, trash stuff, like Oh, Donna, Mack The Knife and Running Bear that filled the radio airwaves ever since Elvis went in the tank, Jerry Lee got caught up in his kissing cousin love thing, and Chuck got put away for messing with Mister's women.
