Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Having trouble getting your five to nine recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables? Drink your vegetables, says Cherie Calbom, the Juice Lady, and she offers 75 juice recipes to help you do it. Juicing not only tastes good and gives you nutrition, but it can also benefit your health, says Calbom. She organizes The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health into 53 medical conditions--such as Alzheimer's, ADD, allergies, influenza, gout, herpes, fibrocystic breasts, diabetes, and depression. For each, she makes recommendations about lifestyle, diet, nutrients, herbs, and juice ingredients, and offers specific juice recipes. The juices are innovative and cleverly named, such as Popeye's Power (with apple, spinach, parsley, carrots, celery, and beet), Ginger Hopper (apple, carrots, gingerroot), Sweet Calcium Cocktail (pineapple, kale), Jack & the Bean (tomato, lettuce, string beans, Brussels sprouts, lemon), and Weight-Loss Buddy (Jerusalem artichoke, carrots, beet). Two caveats: (1) Realize that you also need the fiber in fruits and veggies, not just the vitamins and minerals from the juice, so don't juice exclusively. (2) Juices are part of healthy nutrition, but they don't cure disease. (She doesn't claim this, but it's easy to jump to that conclusion from the way the book is organized.) Enjoy the juices and use them to support your health, but don't expect that juicing will cause a change in a medical condition. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Cherie Calbom is passionate about health and healing because she healed her body from debilitating chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyaligia by designing a her own fresh veggie juice and whole foods diet plan. She was so amazed at how her health turned around that she went to graduate school and earned a Master of Science degree in whole foods nutrition from Bastyr University so that she could be a credible source of information. Before she had graduated from Bastyr, the owners of the Juiceman company hired her to write a little booklet for their juicer. One thing led to another and she became "The Juice Lady." Her first book, Juicing for Life, was an international best-seller. It's now available in her third edition as The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health. Then she learned about the amazing health benefits of virgin coconut oil. She wrote about it in The Coconut Diet. Cherie is a raw foods chef who makes green smoothies and fresh juice every day for herself and her husband. Even her dog Annie, the Schnauzer, benefits with homemade meals of veggies, meat, and brown rice. You can sign up for Cherie's free monthly newsletter at www.juiceladyinfo.com.

3.0 out of 5 stars informative yet redundant March 11, 2002
Format:Paperback
Last year at x-mas my wife and decided that since we just had a baby and funds were low, that we would buy each other one gift that we picked out around $20.00.
I picked a beard trimmer and my wife picked out the Juice Ladys book.So I thought I would be nice and buy her two Juice Ladys books.
Well the books came and I looked through them, and found to my surprise that the same recipes were printed throughout both books.
A lot of the recipes can be used for the same things. So instead of printing the recipe then putting what it can be used for the recipes are reprinted over and over.
So in retrospect I suggest buying one book instead of two or three with different titles, because they have the same recipes.
I hope this has been of some help for those looking to buy this or other Juice Lady books.

"The Juice Lady's Guide to Juicing for Health" is designed for anyone suffering from a specific disorder. This book is perfect for anyone suffering from Alzheimer's, allergies, anxiety, cancer, colds, depression, eczema, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, indigestion, insomnia, migraines, arthritis, stress or ulcers and many more...

Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the disease or disorder discussed. Diet, Herb, Juice and Nutrient recommendations are then given. For instance in the chapter on Alzheimer's disease it is recommended that you do a live cleanse. The Juice recommendations include:

Tomato Florentine - tomatoes, spinach, basil and lemon
Popeye's Power - apple, spinach, parsley, carrots, celery and beet
Wheatgrass Light - apple, wheatgrass, mint and lemon
Memory Mender - tomato, lettuce, cauliflower and lemon
Sweet Dreams Nightcap - lettuce, parsley, carrots and celery
Antiaging Cocktail

Most of the recipes are repeated throughout the book under each disorder. I didn't count them but it seems like there are only 20-30 recipes in this book. Still some are worth trying and the Antiaging Cocktail was delicious. It is made with grapes, raspberries, lemon and ginger. The only issue I had with the recipe was the quantity of juice it produces. It was only about ½ a cup of juice. None of the recipes have any information on how many servings each will produce. From what I can tell most of the recipes produce one serving.

At the end of the book there is information on juice fasting and cleansing. However, the information on fasting is especially brief. If you want to go on a juice fast I'd recommend you buy com/Juice-Fasting-Detoxification-Healing-Power/dp/1878736655">Juice Fasting and Detoxification: Use the Healing Power of Fresh Juice to Feel Young and Look Great : The Fastest Way to Restore Your Health.

This is the second book I have purchased written by Cherie Calbom. This book is very focused in addressing specific ailments, conditions, and diseases succinctly. Cherie not only addresses each topic from the standpoint of a brief/simplified pathophysiology, she also provides comprehensive diet recommendations including which whole foods will help, and also which nutritional supplements, herbs, and juice therapies apply. She also provides specific Juice recipes and discusses appropriate exercises to consider. She paints a wholistic picture to address complex issues.

As a heatlhcare practitioner, I find her approach very sound. I have applied some of the principles to my personal ailments after researching her recommendations with other sources, and continue to have very good results.

5.0 out of 5 stars MMMM! Health, wellness, energy and great taste! June 11, 2000
Format:Paperback
What more could we want? This perky lady has stuffed another of her popular books with all the great nutritional ideas, easy-to-make recipes and interesting uses for juice anyone could want! This is the ultimate reference book - I prefer it to all her other books, although I have them all. She's the spokeslady on QVC - you know, the chirpy one who seems so smart. Well, read the book and you know she's not only smart, but she knows how to make healthy stuff taste GREAT! Good Work, Ms. Calbom! Thanks SO much for your work!

4.0 out of 5 stars Juicing cured my high cholesterol February 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
According to the Amazon review "Enjoy the juices and use them to support your health, but don't expect that juicing will cause a change in a medical condition. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title." Well that is just not true. My overall cholesterol dropped 110 points from 288 to 178. Other conditions have improved as well. I am now quite alkaline, I know this because I use urine test strips. Because of my now alkaline body I no long get chronic headaches, chronic inflammation in my joints, bleeding gums. I have lost weight and my body buzzes with life force energy. I feel good enough to exercise regularly, something I have never done in my adult life until the past 2 years when I cut out animal products and began juicing regularly. I just completed a 26 day juice detox with the help of this book. Delicious recipes. She gives recommendations for ailments and on day 20 of my juice feast, after drinking the 'Liver Life Tonic' recipe, I passed what I believe where gall stones and I didn't even have to follow her Seven-Day Gallbladder Flush protocol, it happen spontaneously after drinking juice made with dandelion greens and having a colonic. Of my 4 juicing books, this is the one that gets pulled out of the bookcase most often. The only problem I have with it is in the Diet Guidelines portion of the book, she uses the government food-pyramid recommendations which I don't agree with but I have the 1st edition and it may have been revised on the 2008 edition.
