Tales from the Vine: Juicy Tomatoes Talk About Being Female, Over Fifty, and in Full Bloom

Juicy Tomatoes introduces you to a group of women who will happily plead guilty to being female and over fifty. That's because they know that being a fifty-plus woman means having wisdom, passion, and savvy to spare, and that the second half of life can be just as fun and fulfilling as the first. They've seen through the myths that say an over-fifty woman can't have good sex or a new career and they've forged ahead despite societal pressure to quietly step down. These juicy tomatoes are redefining what it means to be a woman over fifty and blazing a trail that promises to change the culture and the lives of those green tomatoes who come after them. Juicy Tomatoes is a refreshing and revealing look at how women meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities that come with age. These stories from life beyond fifty are funny, poignant, inspiring, and unflinchingly honest.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Written with insight, humor, and a 'we're getting older so we may as well enjoy it' spirit, Juicy Tomatoes perfectly captures the real issues and essence of midlife for women.
—Susan Evans and Joan Avis, authors of The Women Who Broke All the Rules: How the Choices of a Generation Changed Our Lives

Juicy Tomatoes is one of those books you'll read and then give to all your women friends. It's insightful, optimistic, wise, and yes, funny. Susan Swartz is telling us things we all need to know about ourselves.
—Robin Beeman, author of A Parallel Life and Other Stories and A Minus Tide

More About the Author

I started writing about women 50 and over when I hit that age and didn't like the over-the-hill black balloon image. I KNEW there were amazing women that age and older and set out to find them. I like the image of JUICY TOMATOES for mature, wise, sassy women, lush and ripe and still on the vine, who are not looking back but charging ahead.
We are lucky to be surrounded by great role models and if we're ever going to change the image of older women it's now. We've got the numbers. There are 39 million Boomer women, more than the population of California.
Sure, there are things to worry about the longer you live on the planet - illness, loss, funny skin things. But age is only a number, a bookkeeping detail.
Susan

My sister, who is older, sent me this book. I wanted to cry with appreciation. I could never put in words the feelings that I had inside untill I read this book. We are all special no matter what our age. With youth comes beauty, but the beauty that women of a certain age have, comes from confidence and wisdom. This book only confirms what I knew deep inside all the time.

Yes -- age matters, like size. Yes -- Madonna will undergo menopause. No -- age is a debit. No -- personal strength and clarity suffers by getting older. For Juicy Tomatoes (and their harvesters) this book is a MUST! Susan Swartz defines women by their commitment to LIFE, and ENERGY, and their FUTURE. Not by the clock, not by the male images in American Beauty. Not just a must-read. A must-live!!!

Three weeks ago I heard the author on the radio and went out and bought the book. Ten pages later I went to Amazon.com and bought 5 copies for friends. Today I am ordering 3 more. I even recommended it to my therapist!
