Comment: This book has already been well loved by someone else and that love shows. It MIGHT have highlighting, underlining, be missing a dust jacket, or SLIGHT water damage, but over-all itâ?TMs still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The New Zealand writer offers beginners a sometimes nontraditional introduction to writing. Promising “inspiration and techniques,” she devotes the larger part of her attention to the former, not getting around to “Writing Essentials” —character, plot, form, setting, and such—until part four of her five-part book. The first three chapters are devoted to such matters as the seeds of inspiration, creative spaces, getting to know yourself (“If you were an object of clothing what would you be?”), and developing your senses. Some of this actually seems helpful in freeing young writers from preconceived notions and anxiety-induced stiffness. Some of it, however, seems designed only to test the reader’s patience. To be fair, Lowry does offer some spot-on observations about the field today, plus practical advice that confirms her familiarity with her subject and helpful quotations from other writers (that confirm theirs). Alas, however, she never does explain what she means by “juicy writing.” Grades 7-12. --Michael Cart

As useful to teachers thinking of ways to inspire young pupils as to the young people themselves. A generous and eclectic mix of stimuli, loosely collected into topics, alongside technical know-how useful to all aspiring writers, I found this fascinating to dip into and something I would definitely use in my English teaching. I'm 28, far from my teen years. I still prefer to think of myself as a young writer though, still learning and perfecting the process. Despite my age, I did find some inspiration in Brigid Lowry's book. Her words tugged at my heart strings when she explained that writing comes from our depths and is comparable to gardening. She told a story of how writing is a hoarding of words and ideas.

I enjoyed the exercises she gives: describe someone by the contents of their fridge, write a piece that describes the day in the life of a shoe, and write about a scene at the dinner table from the point of view of each person. This book is great if you are struggling with writer's block. These exercises can definitely get the creative juices flowing.

I enjoyed this book and even wrote down some of the brainstorming and writing exercises for later use. For what this book is intended for, young writers, I think it is a job well done. If you are looking for something more technical or how to write something that sells, you will want to look elsewhere.
