Sorry for the Living Dead reference.
But seriously, don't listen to these dummies.... No, "seriously, folks, -- you'd have to have your brain eaten out a yore skull, I believe 'disembrained' is the correct term, to not get this incredible collection of musique...." SERIOUSLY now. This CD made me use the adjective "wonderful" sincerely for the first time in a long time. A guaranteed cure for your cynical ear . . . "cynicism" being an Old-World white man's word. Some of the sweetest, most sincere music I have ever heard, and that's the truth. None of your phony-baloney "I was absolutely riveted" adjective-salad critiques here. This is the real deal. It's not gentle but it is kind. Putting the 'ruth' back in truth . . . O mercy. Thank you Rounders. Thank you Africa.

This CD was produced by the musicologist C.A. Waterman who also wrote a book about JuJu music. This record is a "must have" to any person interested in Ju Ju music. The historical notes in the accompanying booklet are very well written. It will be a surprise to some listeners from the Caribbean to learn that there are some connections between the early forms of Ju Ju music and cuban son in particular with the music of Trio Matamoros.

I am actually confused. I own the original LP release of the record with the title "Ju Ju Roots" (Rounder CD5017) which was produced by C.A. Waterman. But the track listing that Amazon has for this record has nothing to do with the content of the original LP. Hence, I'm not sure which CD you are offering. If it is the one produced by Waterman I would love to have it in CD format. This record is a "must have" to any person interested in Ju Ju music.

Looks Just like Jean Redpath's "Father Adam" Philo #1061Jean's album, like all of her works, is great. 5 Child Ballads and all the other songs have a true Scottish folk history. The name on this CD doesn't sound right but the song titles are all good.

I love juju music, and I love old recordings from the 30s and 40s (lots of old Hawaiian, Bluegrass, and early Singing Cowboy discs in my collection). I usually don't mind the LP noise because that's part of the package. In this case, however, I was very disappointed--angry, really--at the poor job of remastering the vinyl or orignial tapes to CD. For the first few tracks, I could barely hear the music above the clicks and hisses. It was only at about the two-thirds mark through the CD that the music was louder than the noise. Furthermore, I found that less than half of the music sounded even remotely like juju music--probably about a third. I really doubt that the earliest, middle-eastern sounding tracks(from what I could tell through the noise) had any role in the creation and evolution of juju. A guide to World Music that I read called this disc "essential." I call it a ripoff.
