Doug Sahm, a veritable Texas music foundation, has had a sure grip on blues, R&B, Tex-Mex, and other territorial strains since the 1960s. These days he stocks his coin-operated record player with fair-to-good rehashes of vintage R&B material from Don and Juan, the Hollywood Flames, and Jesse Belvin, along with a few unprogressive shuffles and rock numbers. I ONCE KNEW DOUG FOR ABOUT THREE YEARS, AND WHEN HE RECORDED THIS LP HE WAS SO PROUD OF IT, HE FELT HE HAD ACCOMPLISHED HIS BEST WORKS, AND ONE LISTEN AND I HAD TO AGREE. I KNOW ONE CAN NOT ACHIEVE PERFECTION, BUT IF YOU TRY YOU CAN ACHEIVE EXCELLENCE, AND IN MY OPINION THATS WHAT WAS DONE HERE ON "JUKE BOX MUSIC"-------- LOVE YA, DOUG SEE YOU IN THE HERE AFTER!

Although I've always loved Doug Sahm's records, I never really thought of him as having a "voice." So I was blown away by the tunes on this CD: warm, delicious vocals surrounded by the most wonderful horn sections. This is one I will listen to for a long time to come.
