An Obscure But Still Worthwhile Series In Spite Of The Odd Error,
By AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jukebox Hits of 1967, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Chances are, if you have reached this volume you were searching either under the generic title Jukebox or, perhaps, for a specific song which brought you here. Either way you have reached one in a series that began in 1991 and which covers every year from 1950 to 1969. Under the Jukebox search, Amazon lists only some of the many volumes produced for CD by JEZEBEL and Double D Entertainment 1992 based in Canada, mixed with others not related to the series but with "Jukebox" as part of the title.
The earlier releases contain neither liner notes nor discographies, but some of those for the 1960s do have minimal text included. In this volume they are written by someone named Joe Spring who, in describing both The Casinos and Kenny O'Dell as "one hit wonders," is incorrect as both had one other charted hit in addition to those at tracks 6 and 23. Not huge hits by any standard, mind you, but charted entries nevertheless, which at least puts them one notch higher than true one-hit wonders. The beauty of this series is that all are original renditions, and while sound and packaging might not be to the taste of everyone, are still adequate, and you will always find one or two selections that are not that easy to locate in CD format. In this volume 2 of 1967, for example, I was delighted to get Keep The Ball Rollin' by Jay & The Techniques [# 14 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in November and their second best hit after Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie]. Another find was The Yellow Balloon by Yellow Balloon (# 25 Hot 100 in April/May) and the only hit for the Oregon/Arizona studio group which would later include Don Grady who played Robbie Douglas on My Three Sons], making them a true one-hit wonder. Another not easy to find is the original of Frankie Laine's # 35 hit that May, Making Memories. They do, however, make the odd error and that can be annoying for those searching for specific songs. One of those mistakes is in this volume. In the summer of 1967 The Esquires had a # 3 R&B/# 11 Hot 100 hit with Get On Up for the Bunky label and, several months later, came back with the sequel And Get Away, which reached # 9 R&B/# 22 Hot 100. The first one is relatively easy to find, but not so the follow-up. I thought I had it at track 16 when I purchased this CD, but lo and behold when you play it you find it's Get On Up. Clearly, whoever put this set together either failed to proof it before letting it hit the market or, perhaps, simply was not familiar with the tune and let it slip by any quality control they may have employed. As for the series, Amazon and its customers would be much better served if this and the others they currently have in stock were collected together under the generic title Jukebox Hits in the same manner as those from Stardust of Canada under Treasured Tunes, Ace Records' The Golden Age Of American Rock 'N' Roll, or Eric's Hard To Find 45s on CD. Perhaps, too, they could seek out supplies of those volumes currently not stocked because, believe me, in spite of the odd error such as the one mentioned, this remains a good source for some hard-to-find selections. Just not And Get Away by The Esquires.

This review is from: Jukebox Hits of 1967, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Extremely disappointed in this one. I found the sound quality to be only marginally better than what I had on my existing 45's. The packaging is ugly and the feeble attempt at liner notes is an embarrassment. As another reviewer has already noted, they even managed to get the title on cut #16 wrong. How in the world does that happen? The correct title should be "Get On Up" by the Esquires. Only redeeming features on this one is that there are 26 cuts including a couple of tunes that are extremely hard to locate. I had not heard nor have I ever seen Jimmy Castors "Hey Leroy" since it charted back in '67. Other hard to find tunes include the aforementioned "Get On Up", Kenny O'Dells "Beautiful People" as well as the Hombres "Let It All Hang Out". Unless there are a bunch of songs you are really looking for on this disc I would skip this one for sure.

Just Average CD,

I too was slightly disappointed in this CD, although it did contain 7 tracks that I did not previously have. My copy also had "Get on Up" by The Esquires instead of their follow-up "And Get Away." Also, there was audio damage which sounded like static all through the last track, "I Can't Help it If I'm Still in Love With You" by B. J. Thomas. But, I did get a few hard to find tracks, which, like the other reviewer says, is all you would want to buy this for.
PS - "Get on Up" is listed as a track on Volume 1, which I also ordered and which hasn't yet arrived. Maybe it is "And Get Away"???
