Special Features

Hailed as one of the finest films ever made, Jules and Jim charts, over twenty-five years, the relationship between two friends and the object of their mutual obsession. The legendary François Truffaut (The 400 Blows) directs, and Jeanne Moreau (Elevator to the Gallows) stars as the alluring and willful Catherine, whose enigmatic smile and passionate nature lure Jules (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold’s Oskar Werner) and Jim (The Fire Within’s Henri Serre) into one of cinema’s most captivating romantic triangles. An exuberant and poignant meditation on freedom, loyalty, and the fortitude of love, Jules and Jim was a worldwide smash in 1962 and remains every bit as audacious and entrancing today. DUAL-FORMAT BLU-RAY AND DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

This is the best edition of JULES & JIM I have seen. The picture and sound are exemplary and for me it was just like seeing the film for the first time, only better. I first saw this movie in a Gala cinema in London in the mid sixties. It set the pulse racing but always looked a little rough with scratchy sound, illegible subtitles and soot and whitewash contrast. These deficiencies were carried over to various VHS copies and laserdisc. The previous Criterion DVD set new standards in terms of definition and sound but the BluRay tops them in a spectacular manner. The disc contains so many extras that it is impossible to view them all in a single evening. Highly recommended at a great price from Amazon.

I first saw this film decades ago, and was totally mesmerized by the "daring" subject matter, and the outstanding performances of both the three leads as well as various supporting actors. Years later, I was slightly less enthralled. For one, it takes much too long to get to the main focus -- the coming together of the three main characters. The director relies too heavily on voice-over narrative to demonstrate what the characters are feeling, and what is happening in terms of plot. More dialogue is needed to present the story, rather than relying on the voice-over to "tell" the audience what is happening, and why the characters are behaving as they do. It feels very much like a silent film.

I have always admired the talents of Jeanne Moreau, and she is exceptional in this film ... but, on second viewing, I feel that the story really and truly is Jules' ... and that this film really and truly belongs to Oskar Werner. Still, a classic well worth the time spent.

This is the one that really did me in. Oh take me away, cinema, for I am forever your humble servant!

In possibly the best directed film ever made, Francois Truffaut's Jules And Jim is the visual equivalent of a raging sonnet, a feast for the heart. And it was love at first site, I instantly fell for it. Everything about this film is life changing and affirming. It is put together masterfully, woven delicately on occasion, but it also gives way to hysteria and total unpredictability. It is what film truly represents as an art form, it takes advantage of all aspects of the medium, and perpetually redefines it.

"You said, "I love you." I said, "Wait." I was about to say, "Take me." You said, "Go."" These are the first lines from Jules And Jim, spoken by the legendary Jeanne Moreau over a pitch black screen. It is both haunting and seduective. AND BOOM! We are catapulted into the frenzied and lively world of the titular heroes. We watch them live. Loud, manic, and rhythmic, we watch them experience the sound and the fury of a world gone implosive by their own wit and grandeur. It only gets better from there. This film just doesn't stop, it remains loyal to the manic pace it marries itself to during the opening sequence.

There are very few born filmmakers. Francois Truffaut is a born filmmaker. He possessed a natural talent for the art form and had an almost childlike curiosity that could only be communicated through the medium. A curiosity for everything under the sun and he wasn't afraid to explore uncharted territory. Francois Truffaut was fearless.

What you get with Jules And Jim is the story of a love triangle. The story of a house caving in on itself.

Maybe for its time this movie was exciting and innovative, but I find it boring and pretentious.
