Review

This delightful children's book is about a bored Berner in search of a job. We join Jules in his search for a job, only to find it was right in front of him all the time. As he explores thoughts of all the more typical Berner or dog related jobs, the illustrations use a squirrel to help add some fun. As with so many children's books, the fun is in finding many of the details in the drawings which aren't immediately apparent. I do hope P.T. Custard does a sequel, or two or three! --Pat Long, Berner-Garde Foundation

More About the Author

I was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, but spent my "wonder years" in Baltimore, Maryland and consider it my hometown. Wanting to be a Park Ranger since a childhood trip to Yellowstone, I attended Colorado State University and graduated with degrees in natural resource management and range conservation. My first career was as an education specialist working for the National Park Service (a Park Ranger!), the U.S. Forest Service, as the Director of Education for the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon and as a Senior Associate for the Institute of Learning Innovation in Annapolis, Maryland. During this career I authored award-winning curriculum-based books used in classrooms nationwide.

Encouraged by my friends I decided to launch my second career as a children's book author/publisher. My first book JULES THE LIGHTHOUSE DOG was inspired by my time living at the Pt. Loma lighthouse with my dog Jules. My publishing company, Black Plume Books, was named to honor my Baltimore roots - a nod to Baltimore's favorite adopted son, Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven - and for the love of the big, black birds I developed while living in Alaska.

I currently live in Eagle River, Alaska with my husband Buddy and my Shetland Sheepdogs, Dill - the star of my books, KID CANINE-SUPERHERO! and THE CROWDED BACKYARD - and Truman, a star in his own mind! Along with my writing, my husband and my dogs, I am kept busy volunteering at the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, Alaska and at Radio Free Palmer.

I bought this book months before it became available on Amazon, on the recommendation of a good friend. My children are now a little too old to appreciate it, but I hope will read it to their own children. I mostly bought it for myself, and Jules has not disappointed. It's written in a light hearted but poignant way, is beautifully illustrated, and filled with love and wisdom. For toddlers through the elementary grades, and for dog lovers of any age.

We recently added Jules the Lighthouse Dog to our library's collection, and it is a very popular book! The illustrations are great, and the story is engaging. Since we are located in Michigan near a lighthouse, and since dogs are popular with nearly everyone, this book has been a hit. We hope there will be more books from this author to follow.

Jules the Lighthouse Dog is an excellent book. Filled with many colorful and artistic illustrations, the book follows Jules, a Bernese Mountain Dog, as he seeks out what his talent in life is. In the end, Jules finds his talent and uses it to benefit others and for good.
This book would make an excellent teaching tool for children who are learning about good deeds, talents, patience, and giving. Adults will appreciate the powerful message within the book - everyone has a talent, they just need to reach inside of themselves and find it!

I thought this book was excellent. Both of my children loved it. The story is a good one and the illustrations add to the story. We really liked the photograph of the real Jules at the end of the book. It made the story ring true. We hope there will be some more Jules stories to come.

I read this book to a group of 1st graders and they loved it!!! That was several months ago and they still ask me to read it again and again and they make the moo sound when they see me coming. This book is witty and wonderful for kids of all ages from 5 to 95, kids like the bright colors and wimsical illustrations, but adults can find something in this story to relate to as well. Trying to find out what we love and what we are best at is a lifetime journey and I can think of no finer companion than Jules to make that journey with. I hope the author writes more kids books about man's best friend(s)
