Julia Baird is a columnist and deputy editor at Newsweek. Previously she was at the Sydney Morning Herald, which she joined as a cadet in 1998 before working as education reporter, election editor, columnist and oped editor.
Her Ph.D., on female politicians and the press, was awarded in 2001, and her book on the subject, Media Tarts: How the Australian Press Frames Female Politicians was published in 2004. Media Tarts was shortlisted for the NSW Premiers Literary Awards in 2005.
In 2005, Baird was a fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press and Public Policy at Harvard, researching the global response to American opinion in the lead-up to the Iraq War.
In 2006, she was the host of the investigative radio program, Sunday Profile, on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
She lives in New York with her husband, two children and a large, friendly dog.
She is not the sister of John Lennon, or any other Beatle, although apparently another Julia Baird is.
