Product Description

When she was in the kitchen, the entire world sat, listened and took notes. Julia Child was the most beloved chef in TV history, from her PBS debut in 1963 as The French Chef" to her retirement decades later. This new documentary follows the life and career of the queen of cuisine, from her early days when she could barely boil an egg to her culinary mastery of French food. A rare and intimate look at the life of a remarkable woman. 2004/color/60 min/NR/Stereo.

From the Back Cover

Julia Child was not a natural-born cook - when she married, she could barely boil an egg. But she fell in love with French food, and soon enrolled at the Cordon Bleu where she learned the great tradition of Classical French cuisine. Later, with two French women, she devoted years to writing a manuscript finally published as "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" which became a culinary classic and sold over one million copies.

Warm and exuberant, Julia was a natural television star. In 1963, she appeared on public television in "The French Chef," a cooking series unlike anything yet seen on TV. Scooping up a spilled potato pancake or coaxing a reluctant soufflé, Julia was not afraid of making mistakes. Soon a nation fed on Shake n' Bake and Tang would be experimenting with quiche Lorraine and boeuf bourgignon and cooking would become a national pastime.

This is the story of Julia's two great loves-love for her husband Paul and for cooking. Through an interview with Julia herself, filmed in her fabled kitchen, and rare images from the photo collection of Paul Child and from family photo albums, Julia Child is revealed as few have seen her before in this tribute and testament to a great American icon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous peek into Julia's remarkable life January 28, 2010
Format:DVD
If you are on any level a fan of Julia Child, this is a "must have." It is warm, charming, entertaining, and very beautifully narrated by Michael Murphy. Her life is a fascinating one, and her exuberance for living is inimitable. Worth the cost just for Murphy's reading of a birthday sonnet Paul Child wrote for Julia before they married.
How like autumn's warmth
Is Julia's face
And how like summer's heat
Is her embrace
Wherein at last
She melts my frozen earth

Beautiful.

I have been a Julia Child fan for years. After seeing the 2010 Film "Julia & Julie" with Meryl Streep's Oscar winning portrayal of Ms. Julia, I fell in love with her all over again.
This is not a COOKING Session DVD. It is a documentary- a PBS American Masters Production, which gives excellent insight into her life. It's mostly personal from childhood through college and her discovery of herself and later-in-life her love for cooking. It is wonderful to see her with her beloved husband Paul and the behind the scenes clips from her many PBS -TV Series. If you are a Julia fan, looking for more insight into what made her tick- this is a well-done film and won't disappoint. Ms. Julia is captivating and inspiring that life is meant to be loved, lived and enjoyed and if it's not FUN- why bother? She remains a marvel- Bon Appite indeed!

The biography of Julia Child was very good. I wanted to see if the movie, Julie and Julia, followed pretty closely. It did! Loved the movie, btw. :)

This is a very interesting video of Julia Child's life. She went through very difficult moments in her life, but her exceptional optimism and 'joie de vivre' always helped her going forward... and win. She was a wonderful lady.
