Ages 8 to 10 will enjoy this story of Julia, told in verse, the story of a girl born into a humble Puerto Rican family at the beginning of last century. With beautiful illustrations, it re-creates the time in which she grew up, and narrates how she became one of Puerto Rico's and Latin America's most beloved poets. Her name is Julia de Burgos and this is her life, before she was big. (summary from the Association of American Publishers"s Publishing * Latino Voices for America Task Force * Latino Recommended Reading List)

Although my two-year-old daughter is too young to know who Julia de Burgos is or to appreciate her work, she loves hearing rhyming verse. This has been a wonderful book to read together. My daughter really listens to all of the words and takes her time looking at the beautiful illustrations, while I also enjoy the language and am reminded of how much I love Julia de Burgos's poetry. Georgina Lazaro does such a fine job of crafting verse that evokes this poet and the place where she grew up that I've already ordered other books by Lazaro in the "Cuando los grandes eran pequenos" series. I am looking forward to reading those with my daughter and hope they inspire her to seek out writing by the authors they portray when the time comes.
