From Library Journal
Drawings are customarily intimate works, communicating the deepest emotions and conceptional interests of an artist in a spontaneous and direct way. The essays in this exhibition catalog argue that Schnabel's works on paper provide new avenues for approaching his oblique and unwieldy paintings and sculptures. Schnabel, an American born in 1951, rose to prominence in the late 1970s with colossal painted forms, symbols, and theatrical situations amid unusual added materials such as broken plates, deer antlers, and branches. He is a difficult yet internationally recognized artist whose works so far are known mostly through exhibitions. This catalog, which was originally published in German in 1989, offers a means of getting acquainted. It is recommended for major contemporary art collections.
