Julianne Hough,
This review is from: Julianne Hough (Audio CD)
This is a very enjoyable collection by a fresh voice and a remarkable clairity. I was surpirised by the tonal changes and the vocal control Julianne displayed. It doesn't sound like a first CD at all. It also doesn't sound like it will be her last.
There is also a variety to the type and style of songs contained and each is delivered with a precise crispness and an entertaining flair. The production and finish are all first rate and the whole CD is completely enjoyable. If you like country music, I don't see how you can pass this up. I think it portends a great many good things to come from Julianne. The duet with her brother shows that talent is a family trait as well.

Ode to Joy, Writ Modern,
This review is from: Julianne Hough (MP3 Download)
To be honest, I was predisposed to dislike Julianne Hough (Pronounced "Huff.") She had everything I dislike about modern Nashville music: young, pretty, blonde, not a songwriter, known for something besides music. She brought everything to the table that needed to be cleared.
But then I saw and heard her. Imagine a dark and rainy day; midnight at mid-day, with a downpour filling the streets to overflowing. There, in the midst of it, is Julianne Hough, skipping along, covered by a shining sunshine umbrella, clean, dry and happy. Despite your darkest angry resentments, you cannot dislike her; in fact, you cannot help but be grateful only to have seen her. Silly? Yes. Implausible? Yes, but there it is. The songs are not timeless, philosophical or deep, although several are catchy and fun. Barely 20 years of age, Hough is not a powerful singer, although she is virtually flawless technically. But this album isn't about the music. It isn't about the marketing. It isn't about anything at all. It is simply a celebration of a very happy, charming, likable young lady whose joie de vivre one cannot help but share.

Not Song Memorable,
This review is from: Julianne Hough (Audio CD)
Julianne Hough has the vocal talent (and of course dance and modeling looks also)Much like Carie Underwood, they are both young, and beautiful. They both have somewhat similar vocal ranges. But the difference is that Carie had the scrutiny of Idol ranks and of course was backed by Simon Cowell and his major music influences, and she had some great commercially written material. The harmony parts in comparing the two, sound similar.
As a country songwriter and producer, I understand the success ingredients are great-song+delivery. Many times the marketing and artist appeal overrides that of delivery, such as in this case. There is no doubt she has the vocal ability, but her style is pushed! The songs and most notably, arrangements do not, in my opinion, reflect or bring out her true talent. The world does not need more songs, it just needs better ones! One cannot help but take a look at Reba, her twang voice, but wow, she can deliver a song that really makes you believe her and feel for the song contents. Julianne, if you read this, get a producer that will help you be true to yourself in the conveying of the songs. I believe the production of the songs on this latest CD song are like others just trying to mass market. As a result, none are memorable and none will in my opinion will ever reach the top charts.

I have been a big fan of Julianne Hough since I first saw her on Dancing with the Stars. She is a beautiful, extremely talented young woman. I was very impressed to hear her sing and really like her first album. Wish her much success.

Can Sing and Dance,
By Gen X Music Addict (Minnesota) - See all my reviews

This album is a good beginning for Ms. Hough. She's got a good, solid voice. The songs are good too. They're not sappy or just fluff like one might expect from such a young lady. There's not many uptempo "rockers," the album tends more toward a measured tempo. However, those songs are not boring or tedious. The lyrics are good and the songs hold the listener's attention; the album doesn't ever get tedious. Good stuff here. The dancer is off on the right foot with this album.

A disappointment,
By Beatle Fan (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Julianne Hough (Audio CD)
Fairly routine country music fare, and quite disappointing. Julianne adopts a highly affected southern accent on most songs - it sounds forced and artificial (That Song In My Head, About Life, Hello). It's like you're not hearing Julianne, you're hearing her impression of how a country singer should sound. She would have been better advised to sing using her natural voice. Often the lyrics that emanate from her mouth are not at all believable (Jimmy Ray McGee, About Life). That might be okay if she was recording an album of cover songs, but these are new compositions. To sum things up, Julianne Hough - although a decent singer - is a country music poser.
Best song: Help Me, Help You. Worst Songs: You, You, You; Hide Your Matches; My Hallelujah Song.

Great Pop/Country Debut From New Girl Julianne!,

Julianne was best known as the x2 champion winner on Dancing With The Stars in the USA,but she can leave that behind her now as she's now a bonafide country singer!
Produced by David Malloy(who's worked with Reba McEntire) this is an excellent collection of very slick, polished Pop/Country music. She also has a stronger voice than her counter-parts Taylor Swift & Kellie Pickler! From her first hit That Song In My Head,to the catchy You,You,You and the cracking uptempos About Life and Hello, this album will have you singing along in no time. She also includes some fantastic ballads like the sensual Hide Your Matches, the excellent message to teens Jimmy Rae McGee(about not been pressured into sex when you're not ready) and the very touching Help Me,Help You(about alcoholism),she delivers a very mature message with this album without been too heavy. With songs like these that skick in your head and a no.1 album under her belt now,Julianne is gonna go a long way in country music.

Better than I thought it would be,

For the last 2 years I have admired Julianne Hough, on Dancing with the Stars. It seemed unfair that she could dance and be so beautiful as well.
To make matters worse the girl can sing...........its not fair. In all seriousness, this CD is outstanding. She has great writers. I dont know that she is as good as Carrie Underwood, but she is certainly better than Kelly Pickler. Infact there are many current country stars that she puts to shame. She has good writers, the songs are certainly better than most of the country stars of today. A song titled "That song in my head" should be a big hit for her, infact there are a few songs that could climb the charts. She is surrounded by good musicians. Her brother Derek does a duet with her as well. Its too bad Dancing with the Stars is over for this current year. It would have been a kick to see her debut her CD on the show. I think we will hear more of Julianne in the coming year....You go girl..............

Julianne is a great dancer.
Her singing is not world class. Unfortunately she sounds like just another pretty blonde who wants to be a country star. Too many of them already. Most no better or worse than Julianne. We just don't need another one. You blow the world away with your dancing. Stick with what you are great at.

I really wanted to love this CD, but after a couple of songs I grew tired of her voice. I just knew it would be great because this gal can dance like no other! I do love the duet with her brother though, they sound so good together and Derek has a wonderful voice. He should record a CD himself! Maybe she will get better material and her voice will mature a bit later on.
