The Dutch saying "a Jan Steen household" originated in the seventeenth century and has come to refer to a home in disarray, full of rowdy children and boisterous family gatherings. The paintings of Steen, along with those of other Dutch and Flemish genre painters, are the direct inspiration behind the layered domestic scenes of Julie Blackmon's photographic work. Raised as the oldest of nine children, and the mother of three herself, Blackmon takes an approach to her work that is at once autobiographical and fictional. According to Anne Wilkes Tucker of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Blackmon has "taken a subject that is ripe for cliché--mother photographing children--and through the subtle, digital manipulations, the use of color and highly graphic images, she's given it humor and edge and taken the subject somewhere fresh."

I had heard and met Julie Blackmon in 2008 at THE LOOK 3 FESTIVAL OF THE PHOTOGRAPH in Charlottesville, VA.
She was funny and the shown images - had all laughing. This was a pre-release presentation by a new photo imprint publisher. The house in the book is her family's and she creates a lot of light in her "look". Her husband is also a successful author. Her kids and friends are her troupe of players. I bought the book for my neighbor's 42nd birthday (second week of July - 2008) but due to distribution troubles - it took Amazon 8 weeks to deliver the book. That became a bad joke between us.... I'd buy it again for myself or a Mom's gift - a great American home-life bit of work....

I just bought copies for my five favorite women,

I discovered this book on my neighbor's coffee table and couldn't put it down. I just ordered my first five copies and will soon order more. Julie's photographs provided me with a huge artistic epiphany. Her work revealed to me the male centric lens of the vast majority of domestic sphere artwork I have viewed in my life: the nice, scrubbed children ready for dad to come home. Julie's photographs depict a world that is more familiar to me as a mom. She captures the chaos and wild absurdities of daily life in a family. And she does it beautifully. I am in love with her work and have been telling everyone I know about it. I really can't get enough.
