Sing It Girl,
By Crystalline Green (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Julie Roberts (Audio CD)
I can admit that I've never been a huge fan of country music except for Johnny Cash. But Julie Roberts has such a beautiful voice and has bluesy elements sprinkled in with her country twang, and it just made me fall in love with the album. When I first heard "Break Down Here" I went out and bought the album but surprisingly enough that's the only one I tend to skip over now. My two favorites are "Wake Up Older" which show her sassy and humorous side, and personally I think "If You Had Called Yesterday" is the best song on the cd because she shows so much raw emotion and it's a topic a lot of us can relate with.

Outstanding,

I never liked female country artists- all the wailing and make up in the videos made it look like they all wanted to be divas or something. However, Julie Roberts was different, this was the first CD of a female I have ever owned and I do not regret it. Her voice is so country, and I love how she is a modern tradionalist like Brad Paisley and Josh Turner. It sounds like she puts her heart and soul into every song. Definitley worth buying guys, dont be afraid. Real country music, nothing like Shania or Faith. Buy this, Turner's, and Paisley's albums- some of the best young, traditional, country artists in the biz.

What country should be!,
This review is from: Julie Roberts (Audio CD)
Instead of going for the overly polished pop country, Julie Roberts has made a CD worthy of buying. Her voice is just right - gorgeous but tough enough to really show that she has lived. This is what you expect from singers like Faith Hill - but that they never deliver. She's amazing and enjoyable. Highly recommended, especially "Wake Up Older" and "The Chance." A perfect debut.

Beautifully Understated,

You won't find any vocal histrionics on this record - just pure emotion. Although it may take a few listens to appreciate, this is a promising debut from a great new talent. Whether pleading with a lover to set her free from her own emotions in "Unlove Me", fleeing from a bad relationship in "Break Down Here", or expressing longing in "Rain on A Tin Roof", Roberts is the picture of conviction. She draws you inside a song, but never overwhelms you. Her subtle expression is a testament that less really is more.

She has a refreshing sound that country has been missing. Her soulfull voice draws you in and the emotional interest its obvious she has in her music will keep you hooked. I just got the CD and sat down to listen to it and it was such a great experience. Julie Roberts takes you on a journey with her songs. You'll smile, laugh, and even shed some tears. Pure Country of 2004,
By Toddrann "Toddra" (Kentucky) - See all my reviews

When you are searching for a cd that holds true to it's genre, don't overlook Julie Roberts. There are certain tracks on this cd that would make you think that there are no such thing as pop creeping into the country world. Her voice sounds like she has been singing her whole life, with 100% emotion backing each word.
1. You ain't Down Home= Reality check for those who think they're better than everyone. Not my favorite 2. Break Down Here= Her breakthrough song, packed with emotion. Her voice shines through beautifully. 3. Pot of Gold= I skip it 4. Unlove me= One of my favorite tracks. Speaks of the hardship of letting love fade. Her voice sounds traditional country on this track. 5. Just Cause We Can= Reminds you of the new freshness to a relationship and the carefree feeling that comes along with it. Gr8t to drive to. 6. Wake Up Older= This song gets me teary eyed everytime. Speaks of a breakup, remember the last fight, drinkin the night's pain away. 7. If You Had Called Yesterday= Listening to this song will make you be glad you let the bad eggs go out of your life, even though hearing their voice makes you weak in the knees for a few seconds. 8. No Way out= Skip it everytime 9. I Can't Get Over you= The beginning acoustic guitar grabs me. The lyrics are for ayone who cannot move forward in life, and stuck in the past. 10. Rain on A tin Roof= Great to listen while falling asleep. Her voice soars on this song. Should be her next single 11. The Chance= The beginning is captivating, with a piano solo. The lyrics are heartwarming, and it shows that she has a true love for her mother. All in all, this cd is worth the money and the time to listen to it.

GREAT NEW VOICE IN COUNTRY MUSIC,
By
This review is from: Julie Roberts (Audio CD)
My favorite country music is by the artist who has a little bit of blues in his/her voice - this lady has it. I truly enjoy every song on this CD and have it in my car CD player & in my I-River MP3 player for working out on my treadmill. Julie's voice is strong & beautiful and I'm ready for her 2nd CD to appear.

Great debut! Country music expanding without going overboard,

Aside from the obvious, Ms. Roberts resembles Faith Hill a great deal which I believe has worked very well in her favor. Fortunately, I know her beautiful voice won't be overshadowed by numerous duets with Tim McGraw.
ANYWAY, this CD is a great listen...no hardcore country-rock type songs with fiddles and dobros (I hope that's the right word) This is country with some pop, but not so much that she's being constantly ragged on on CMT. The best song by far is "Unlove Me." A great old-fashioned sounding country song, which was actually co-written by country legend Paul Overstreet. Other great songs include "Down Home" "Pot of Gold" and "Wake Up Older" I admit, like another reviewer said that some songs are skippable and whole CD in itself isn't mind-blowing but it's a great beginning. Her hit single "Break Down Here" does get a little tiring after a while, but the lyrics are really good and flow nicely.

A true "Pot O' Gold!",
By kjf (California) - See all my reviews

I was surprised at first as to how much I adore this album...why? My usual preferences tend to lean toward uptempo, feel-good songs. Yet, most of the songs on this album are slow to mid-tempo, and the majority deal with heartache and despair. Don't get me wrong - there are some happy and uptempo numbers (I'll get to in a minute), but the majority of the album highlights Julie's soulful, powerful delivery of emotion. "Unlove Me" is incredibly heartbreaking, and haunting in a way, as she pleads with her lover, "before you leave me, please unlove me...let me go back to the way I was before we met". You feel her pain and the melody is so infectious, it sucks you right in. "If You Had Called Yesterday" portrays the emotion of receiving that phone call from a lost love that you longed for, but realizing that finally, today, you are over him. "Wake Up Older" is a gritty depiction of what one may do when they lose a lover -- turning to a bottle or the comfort of a stranger. "Break Down Here" shows us a woman who has left a bad situation and although she knows it was the right thing to do it still hurts and she hopes she just doesn't break down (that the car doesn't break down or that she doesn't break down emotionally). All of these songs are sung with such incredible passion and soul.
On a lighter note, the album kicks off with "You Ain't Down Home" in which Julie shows a little sass with a very rootsy sound...talking to a guy who has all the material possessions he could want, but "you got one little problem, baby, you ain't down home." Love it! - this one should be a single. "Pot O' Gold" is a very cute, happy song where she sits in a cafe watching "the world rushing by" but just smiles because she has found her pot of gold (a special guy). "Just 'Cause We Can" is a fun song about a couple spontaneously running away together, and "No Way Out" is an uptempto, fun (but simple) song about being in love through the good and bad. You can just hear Julie smiling through all of those! The only mundane song - for me - is "I Can't Get Over You". To me, this is just another typical, country heartache song that is just what the title says. Still a passionate delivery, but nothing special. I really wish country radio was giving Julie more air play. She is incredibly talented, and her smokey, bluesy voice adds a touch of uniqueness that can't be duplicated. I just can't stop listening to this album! |
