Book Description

8 and up3 and upAmerican Girl
Julie is enjoying working on her school project, "The Story of My Life," until she comes to the part about "The Worst Thing That Ever Happened." That would be her parents' divorce, and she doesn't want to tell her class about that. Julie tries to find a different "Worst Thing" to tell about--and after her big basketball game ends badly, she thinks maybe she's found the solution to her problem. But as her parents and sister rally around her, Julie finds herself thinking about her family in a new, and more hopeful, way.

More About the Author

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME

10. The first book I ever wrote was about a hermit crab, inspired by a pet I once owned.

9. My favorite color is purple.

8. I love to read mysteries. When I was Judy's age, I read all 56 classic Nancy Drew books . . . in order! Jeepers!

7. I used to collect scabs so I could examine them under the microscope that I got for my 8th birthday.

6. My four sisters and I often made up our own language, which included the words "Hoidi Boidi", "oogey", "retzel crummypuss" and "poony-poony".

5. My favorite TV show is JEOPARDY!

4. To research my Sisters Club book, THE RULE OF THREE, I toured San Francisco in search of the ultimate cupcake. The winner: Sleepless in San Francisco. Think chocolate + coffee.

3. When I was a kid, I fell down a hill from chasing the ice-cream truck and had to get stitches.

2. When I was a librarian, I used to tell stories in sign language. That's how I got the expression "same-same" for Judy.

1. I share a birthday (February 28) with a famous princess, race car driver and gangster, a Rolling Stone, a French tightrope walker, and a winning racehorse named Smarty Jones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tell Me About It, May 4, 2008
Julie's finally settling in at Jack London Elementary School. She loves being part of the basketball team (in fact, she's the only girl on it!) and she likes her fourth grade teacher. If only she didn't have this "Story of My Life" project looming overhead! After her father surprises her with a tape recorder, Julie conducts mini-interviews with her father and her mother, records silly songs and sound effects with her best friend Ivy, and eavesdrops on her older sister Tracy. Julie has a little accident while plant-sitting Tracy's science project, and an even bigger accident on the basketball court. Her melancholy passes when she confesses the truth and realizes that she rather likes the story of her life.

Julie Tells Her Story is the second book about Julie Albright. The character reminds me a bit of Dawn from The Baby-Sisters Club by Ann M. Martin, with her California cool and the way she is illustrated by artist Robert Hunt.

Written by Megan McDonald, the Julie books are part of the American Girls line of books, which offer realistic glimpses into America's past through the eyes of young girls and furthermore encourage the girls of today to reach for the stars.
