This book was EXCELLENT!, July 4, 2005
This review is from: Julie of the Wolves: Treasury (Julie of the Wolves, Julie, and Julie's Wolf Pack) (Hardcover)
If readers didn't care for this book, it's probably because they are too young to understand a lot of it, or they are too young to be patient enough to get to the end, or they have not learned to appreciate all that is in nature. But the ending is well worth the trip.
This book was so good ? I can't even begin to explain it to you. Basically, this is about a young Eskimo girl who was taught by her grandfather to respect "the old ways," but the modern world is fast approaching, and Julie does not always like the changes she sees in her village and her father. Then her father leaves, placing her in a "foster family" type of situation, and it's not a good one... When something shocking almost happens, Julie makes a decision that changes her life. She decides to flee and go to her father, but in order to get there, Julie must make it over the wintry tundra, empty of everything but snow and ice and wolves. She shows such a respect for the animals that should be her enemies, and to survive the winter joins the pack. She learns a great deal about the world and herself, as she braves what few people can't even imagine in the face of trials.
I honestly didn't like it toward the ending at first, and I cried - which broke the tension for my 5th graders, because they got to laugh as I cried. I was enjoying such a cool cry that one of my students had to finish the last chapter for me! THAT was pretty funny. And when I got to the end, I realized that sometimes when the world can't change for us, WE have to change for the world, and adapt. So I got along with the ending, after all.
The book really gave us a view of the world as an "ecosystem," and the behavior of the wolves was very realistic and awesome. Each wolf had its own personality and played a role within the pack. Our whole class really enjoyed this - even the kids who hate to read!
