Holden Caulfield In Paris,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Julien Parme (Hardcover)
Julien Parme is Holden Caulfield in modern Paris. If you are looking for a French version of "The Catcher in the Rye" then this novel will not disappoint you. It also reminded me of the German author Benjamin Lebert's "Crazy", another European coming of age novel. Young European authors must have discovered that the secret to literary fame is to write a version of "The Catcher in the Rye" for their culture.
While Holden Caulfield ran off to New York City, Julien Parme runs off to Paris so you get some insight into contemporary Paris by reading this novel. Julien Parme aspires to be a famous writer and mentions Balzac and Jean de La Fontaine. But one cultural reference that you may not get, is why he should purchase a comic book of Scrooge McDuck. This would actually be a bande dessinée. Donald Duck is an unlikely pop culture hero in Germany were comic books with that Disney character are best sellers so some of his popularity must spill over into France. |
