Editorial Reviews

Review

I LOVE it so far! I had just gone to a literacy workshop and so many of the activities that were presented there I found in the lesson plan. This makes my life easier while getting the students exactly what they need. I can now focus more on helping them then creating quality worksheets/reading guides! --Secondary Solutions Review from customer Lauren

About the Author

Kristen Bowers is a former English teacher and the founder and President of Secondary Solutions. She has written over 15 books, including Literature Guides for Of Mice and Men, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and more, as well as two essay writing Guides: Essay Apprentice and Essay Architect. In 2005, Mrs. Bowers became frustrated and tired of writing her own worksheets, quizzes, tests, and activities to teach her students the required literature and the content standards on which her students were being tested at the district and state levels. At the time, resources and tools that were available for purchase were not up to her high standards of teaching, so she decided to create these materials herself.

Mrs. Bowers set to work to create one of the most comprehensive and innovative Literature Guide sets on the market. Joined by a middle school teacher with 21 years of secondary school experience, Secondary Solutions began, and has since matured into a specialized team of intermediate and secondary teachers who have developed a set of Literature and Writing Guides unsurpassed by all others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Julius Caesar Literature Guide (Common Core and NCTE/IRA Standards-Aligned Teaching Guide) (Paperback)
This literature guide has several activities that I found very useful in the classroom. I liked that it was broken up by act providing specific activities and graphic organizers for each act corresponding to the events and specific literary elements present within that act. There are also great project ideas.

This review is from: Julius Caesar Literature Guide (Common Core and NCTE/IRA Standards-Aligned Teaching Guide) (Paperback)
I teach High School English, all grades, in a private school and at the local homeschool co-op. In order to pull together a well-rounded set of lessons, I recently purchased several different study guides for Julius Caesar. This one stood out above them all. Its logical structure was easy to use and its scope deep enough to teach without overwhelming. Soon, I found that I was returning to the lessons in this book again and again - to the exclusion of all of the other study guides I purchased.

Each worksheet in this book gave my students such an in-depth look at, and understanding of, specific literary devices and techniques that everyone passed my notorious end-of-unit exam. Some only by one point, but EVERYONE passed.

Because of this, I have begun using Secondary Sources to the exclusion of all other brands in order to teach specific literary devices and techniques. I highly recommend it for your classroom, as well.
