One of the greatest albums of all time!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jumblequeen (Audio CD)
The great John Peel (undisputedly the foremost discoverer of new musical talent in the UK) almost incessantly bombarded his radio audience with this woman's extraordinary voice in the seventies, and quite rightly too! Quintessentially English, with a tendancy toward the mystical; a breathy, haunting, flute-like quality to the singing, a strange and startling combination of innocence and wisdom in the lyrics. If devotees of June Tabor or Sandy Denny wish to see if their Heroines had any peers, they had better listen to this album a few times. The accompaniments, surprisingly, have hardly dated (except perhaps the 'bonus tracks' on the CD which were not on the original vinyl, and need to considered separately, but, although they aren't, in my view, up to the standard of the rest of the album, are still worth hearing). The power of some of the material, like the title track, is simply staggering! The magical voice, the evocative words, the seductive melody all come togeth! er in an overwhelming emotional rush. Devastating!

CONSIDERED THE BEST OF HER SEVERAL FINE ALBUMS,
By
This review is from: Jumblequeen (Audio CD)
47 minutes in length approximately. The remastered sound is crisp and clean. The booklet has information on St. John, the songs, and the era. The lyrics are reprinted along with backing musicians for each track, which is generally a small group. The CD is snapped in,inside the fold-out cardboard holder. This edition contains three bonus tracks.
With this album, which is generally considered her finest,Bridget St. John continued to write and sing another good collection of songs. Her voice,a combination of a slightly husky tone, combined with a floating, ethereal quality, fit the mood of her songs perfectly. The songs on this album have a slightly dark feel to them, where before there was a feeling of innocence. This slightly edgier approach helps give these songs a depth that's different from her previous albums. With all the songs fitting together seamlessly, this album makes a distinct impact. Supported from the beginning by well known DJ John Peel,St. John's albums were critical favorites. And while they never sold in large quantities, she had a reputation as one of Britain's finest singer/songwriters. This album is a reflection of St. John's life, which was in turmoil at this point, and that's what lifts this album above her others. It's still amazing that an artist of her caliber is still unknown. She deserves to be heard by everyone who likes well written, arranged, and masterfully sung songs. While "Jumblequeen" is considered St. John's finest work-all her albums from this era contain a number of equally fine songs, beautifully arranged. She deserves better. Listen and find out for yourself.
