5.0 out of 5 stars Got one and getting another!
I have been learning Thai for two years now and have found this the best of all the many books I have. I like the clear instruction at the begining, the way it handles how to tell the time etc as well as the clear method af actually sounding each word. Many books require you to learn a convaluted system of their own which slows things up. Lots of handy phrases as well...

2.0 out of 5 stars Jumbo English-Thai Dictionary
I took a chance and ordered the as yet unreviewed Jumbo Thai dictionary. My Thai friend and I were both pleased with it and conversing well, until I wanted to know the Thai word for truth. I took a chance and ordered the as yet unreviewed Jumbo Thai dictionary. My Thai friend and I were both pleased with it and conversing well, until I wanted to know the Thai word for truth. I then realized that 17 pages were missing from the book. Other than that obviously unacceptable flaw, it seems to be a great resource for someone just beginning to learn Thai. The online catalogue gives no info about the book so I'll supply some: More than 10,000 useful words, (maybe less in mine) and phrases, shown in English-phonetic pronunciation and in actual Thai-language writing. I was worried that it might be too large to be practical but it is similar in size to most soft cover dictionaries. The copyright date is 1997.

Many books require you to learn a convaluted system of their own which slows things up. Lots of handy phrases as well. It is not perfect but for its size and price I have found it the best. I am buying a second copy for a friend who is also learning. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jumbo English Thai Dictionary, April 2, 2002

This review is from: Jumbo English Thai Dictionary (Paperback)
This is an excellent dictionary for anybody who doesn`t as yet read and write thai. Besides from tones and transliterations as already mentioned by the other reviews the author also adds an array of invaluable comments that provides indepth insight into thai culture.
Having said that it doesn`t deserve 5 stars as there are a number of very common words that for some strange reasons are left out. Very annoying, instead the author gives great effort to mention all the grades within police force and army.
In his transliteration he doesn`t separate between long and short vowels which is very unfortunate.
When mentioning nouns he doesn`t mention the appropriate classifier/counter as well. That would be a nice feature. Because although there are rules for those they might as well be mentioned together with the noun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jumbo, May 17, 2000

This review is from: Jumbo English Thai Dictionary (Paperback)
This dictionary is an excellent dictionary as far as it goes and in my copy there does not seem to be any missing pages. I would prefer the tones to be represented at the end of the word and have employed this in my language studio with students who seem to find this more comfortable.

What a pity there is no JUMBO Thai-English dictionary. If anyone knows of a Thai-English dictionary with transcription of Thai characters into Latin letters I would love to know. Perhaps Jumbo does one?
