Book Description

What reviewers are saying about JUMP CUT:
"A rollicking good read. All the elements are there: prostitutes and drug-running, newsrooms and squad rooms, romance and action. Jump Cut is in turns funny and gritty, cozy and hardboiled, romantic and illusion-shattering."

“An engaging heroine every woman can identify with: good-natured, smart, harried, all too aware she’s growing older. She just wants to catch a break. I loved her almost as much as I loved Rory Tate’s breezy, fast-paced writing style!” -- Katy Munger, award-winning author of the Casey Jones mysteries

“The twists and turns keep you going in this story that seems to have several separate stories, but somehow intertwine. Well written, well defined characters that are very likable.”

“Great book, hopefully the beginning of a new series, characters are worth visiting again and again. Highly recommended.”

“A perfect sit-by-the-fire-on-a-gray-day-with-a-pot-of-tea kind of book.”

“Jump Cut – n., a jarring transition in the temporal flow in film, television, or life, sometimes intentional but rarely without a good deal of second-guessing, hand-wringing, and tears”

Seattle reporter Mimi Raynard is having a bad week. Her ex-husband is now her boss at the TV station and wants her head on a platter. When three prostitutes die of a suspicious heroin overdose Mimi gets the story but in her nervous enthusiasm manages to bungle it. The narcotics detective on the case tries to help but both are out-foxed by the buxom intern.
Desperate for a new job Mimi takes a friend’s advice and dresses up as a Russian Mafiya Madam for a resume tape she has no intention of sending out. But the lark turns serious when the intern steals the tape. At the Seattle Police Department the narcotics detective Shad Mulgrew has his own career crisis. He is framed for stealing drugs from evidence. Are the murdered prostitutes linked to his case? Is he getting too close to the truth? And what is Mimi's father doing working for Eastern Europe's last Communists?
Working together to save their reputations, Mimi and Shad look for the truth, from the fishing docks of Puget Sound to the tiny Republic of Moldova. At turns funny, sexy, and thrilling with an edgy modern voice, Jump Cut depicts Seattle from the inside, from the joys of Seattle single life to dark alleys, from the islands to the top of the Space Needle, as the cop and the reporter try to salvage their reputations. They end up saving much more than their careers in a wild race to rescue the city they love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jumping around in paradox December 18, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Jump Cut - n., a jarring transition in the temporal flow in film, television, or life, sometimes intentional but rarely without a good deal of second-guessing, hand-wringing, and tears"

So says the epigram at the beginning of Rory Tate's novel, Jump Cut. It's a fitting title and motif for the story of Mimi Raynard, a metaphor for the paradoxes with which she lives. If one can be both hapless and brilliant, emotionally secure and grieving a parentless childhood, independent and longing for connection, then one can be Mimi. A reporter who's had some unfortunate on-air moments, almost certainly because of circumstances beyond her control, Mimi's in search of journalistic vindication. She teams up with Shad Mulgrew, a falsely-accused narcotics detective in search of his own vindication. In the serendipitous world of detective fiction, the reporter and the detective are working the same case, which jumps from Seattle to Moldova and back to Seattle, from hurt to healing, from disconnection to intimacy.

All the elements are there: prostitutes and drug-running, newsrooms and squad rooms, romance and action. Jump Cut is in turns funny and gritty, cozy and hardboiled, romantic and illusion-shattering. It's also a rollicking good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump Cut is Great! November 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a thriller, a mystery, and a bit of romance, in this very exciting book by Rory Tate. The main characters are Mimi, a reporter with an ex-husband for her boss, and he does not make it easy for her, but it's nothing to what her long missing father puts her through, and a cop, Shad Mulgrew, who was working on a case of 3 deaths of prostitutes who have OD'd but it appears to be homicide. He has been investigated by IA and is being charged with stealing drugs from a previous drug bust. Both characters are really down on their luck. The twists and turns keep you going in this story that seems to have several separate stories, but somehow intertwine. Well written, well defined characters that are very likeable. And best of all, it takes place in Seattle mostly. I live across the Sound from there. Great book, hopefully the beginning of a new series, characters are worth visiting again and again. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice delivery January 8, 2013

While there were a few instances where more transition between geographical locations would have been helpful, the plot twisted nicely and kept the reader reaching for the answers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jump Cut October 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the prologue, this seems to be a serious detective/spy/thriller. The next chapter it switches gears and becomes a humorous detective novel. The novel jumps back and forth between a serious murder which the cops investigate and the funny mishaps of our heroine, Mimi. I was confused about the purpose of the novel. The two styles start to converge and the result is satisfying. Ergo the title, Jump Cut?

Mimi says whatever comes into her head, which isn't always a smart thing to do. Meanwhile, we are introduced to Shad Mulgrew, a cop who's as tight-lipped as Mimi is gregarious. A healty number of supporting characters are involved but they have good character development and individual voices so it's not confusing who's who.

The plot is well-paced, the characters are well-defined and mostly believable, and the writing style is pleasant. While this isn't great literature, it's amusing and intriguing enough for light reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner April 27, 2012
Format:Paperback
What a gripping page-turner! I had trouble putting Jump Cut down once I got into it! I thought the subplots were intriguing and came together in a very clever way. The characters were thoroughly developed and plausible. There was something for everyone -- complicated relationships, love, sex, and fascinating information and locations obviously well researched. Thankfully the violence was integral to the story and not overly dramatized for effect. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk to get JUMP CUT! January 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Mimi Raynard shares several characteristics of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. However, she's not from New Jersey but the opposite shore of Seattle, Washington. Murder, a long lost father, an ex husband, trouble at the office, as well as a new love are all rolled into this book. From the minute I started reading JUMP CUT to the final page I was spellbound by the twists and turns of this novel. I'm praying the author follows up with a sequel so I can see what happens next for Mimi!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump Cut October 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The realms of black tar heroin, prostitution, eastern european mobs, terrorism, and the office politics of news reporters and police detectives are softened by enough relationship scenarios and descriptions of Seattle to make this a perfect sit-by-the-fire-on-a-gray-day-with-a-pot-of-tea kind of book. I will buy hard versions when it comes out November 1st.
