Biography

Brian Setzer is one of those wild geniuses who keeps the Earth properly spinning on its axis – a consistent institution who you can count on while pretty much everything else comes and goes. If nothing else, he might be saving American history from the scorch of its own warped magnifying glass memory. We’ve screwed up the 50’s – reduced it into one giant goof cartoon of crummy over-fattening… Read more in Amazon's Brian Setzer Store

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT !!!, June 26, 2003

This review is from: Jump, Jive an' Wail - The Very Best of the Brian Setzer Orchestra (Audio CD)
When you think of "big band" a guitar is not the first instrument that comes to mind. But put that guitar in the hands of Brian Setzer and you've got something HOT! A mix of the big band beat that everybody loves and the driving guitar style of rockabilly's #1 axeman and the joint starts jumping.
This is a compilation from the 4 albums made by the BSO and there are some real diamonds here. A great mix of music - from Glenn Miller to Queen to Louis Prima to Stray Cats songs. You'll hear the fat sound of the horns, the booming upright bass, the drummer going wild and Brian leading the way with a guitar that talks, sings, screams, crys and wails. If you're looking for a real good sample of the BSO in one CD, this is the one you want. The Swing revival is running high and this is one of the bands that started it all. So Hepcats and Kitties - dust off your two-tone shoes and get ready to hit the dance floor - this CD will make you move and groove.

Brian Setzer runs a tight band. Good musicians, well skilled and great performers. Swing music requires a bit more skill than the usual 3-chord Ramones song. Multiply those three chords by the number of people involved and the skill necessary to get this type of sound increases.

This band has the skill for swing music and is a joy to listen to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Swinging Party CD, November 27, 2005

This review is from: Jump, Jive an' Wail - The Very Best of the Brian Setzer Orchestra (Audio CD)
Brian Setzer's interpretation of these standards is great. His rockabilly-infused big band sound breathes new life into some songs that have never been my personal favorites. However, while I do not doubt his artistry and vision, I do wish he'd revive a few standards that are not quite as obscure. Still, this a great effort.
