Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With a simple, rhyming text and action-packed artwork, this picture book will appeal to young preschoolers, who will delight in the surprise turnaround on every double-page spread. Well, I’m a bug. I’m a bug. I’m a snug little bug, and I’m sleeping on a jug. Until I see a frog, and I . . . JUMP! says a fat-bellied bug, who flies off just in time to escape a leaping frog. Then it’s the frog’s turn to narrate: I’m a frog in a bog, and I’m sleeping like a log, until I see a cat, and I . . . JUMP! The story follows a similar pattern as the cat jumps from a hound, the hound from a croc, and so on until the final scene with a whale, who decides to end the tale. Even after kids have figured out what is coming, they will enjoy the animals’ shifts in power roles, all depicted in lively drawings, rendered in thick black lines and strong, bright colors against blank white space. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Hazel Rochman

The watercolor illustrations are well done, colorful, and humorous.

One of the great ways for children to learn to recognize words and rhyming is through repetition.

I also enjoy when the book is fun to read and has it's own personality.

Hi everyone! My name is Scott M. Fischer and I am the author/illustrator of JUMP!

What a lot of folks find surprising is that 'Jump' was actually a song long before it was a book! So I thought it would be a hoot to upload a video of me performing JUMP for the kiddies! (You get to see the whole book in this video too!) Remember to put your jumping shoes on!! Thanks everyone for the support!

A good children's librarian is never satisfied. Never content with his or her lot. It doesn't matter how many great read aloud picture books we've culled for our storytimes. Like Captain Ahab we're on the search for "the one". That great picture book that'll leave `em dead in the aisles (not literally . . . that would be a bit dark). We prowl the ALA Conventions, hunt the bookstore shelves, and sniff through professional journals never stopping, never ceasing. Our work is never done. In the course of my own searching, I stumbled on a little book of no extraordinary physical note. Jump! by Scott M. Fischer sits quietly on a shelf. No spangled doodads or pop-up whizbangs explode when you open it. No tinny tunes or scanimation wonders draw you in. It has words. It has pictures. It has pictures with words. It also has a beat and you can dance to it. Find yourself cornered at a three-year-old's birthday party and you have to read them something fun? Heading up your library's next toddler storytime and you need a book to get a crowd riled? Grab yourself some Jump! then, my friend. It's hep. It's hopping. It's happening to boot.

It starts, with a bug. "Well, I'm a bug. I'm a bug. I'm a snug little bug, and I'm sleeping on a jug. Until I see a frog, and I . . . . JUMP!" So it begins. The bug now gone (escaped, don't worry) the frog picks up the narrative, sleeping on a log, until a hound comes along and, you guessed it, the frog jumps. Various animals attempting to nap midday find their slumber consistently interrupted by other animals that may wish them harm. The cat leaps at the frog, the hound goes for the cat, the croc for the hound, the shark for the croc, and finally the whale for the shark, after which he ends the whole tale with a mighty "SPLOOSH!

We adore this book!!! My four year old daughter is so tickled by the many animals and their Jumping adventure. The watercolors are bright and friendly. Every time I read the book to her she then loves to recite it back to me, it has such a wonderful lyrical quality. Once she heard the song from the story (shown above) she was completely hooked!

"Jump" is the most requested book in the house right now for my two children and now the most requested song too! Get Jumping!

We got this book out of a Cheerios box and like it so much we are buying a hard copy. Our 1 1/2 year old son loves it and we enjoy reading it to him. Now whenever he tries to "jump" we start a game of saying the book where ever we are because we have it memorized.

So why buy the book if we already have a free copy? Because we believe in supporting the work of Authors/Artists in the hopes that they will continue to do more. Thanks Mr. Fischer!

I'm a "Skype" grandma, and there is only one way for me to read a story to my granddaughter or to share it with her. And that is over the computer.

We started by showing Andromeda the video here on Amazon that shows the author actually playing the song on the guitar. I got to watch her as she listened and started jumping with the kids. So, when she saw the book arrive, she immediately had to have Mom read the book.

Needless to say, she knew just what to do when the book said "jump." She jumped! A couple of hours later, I asked about it on Skype. As soon as Andromeda saw the book, she had to have it read to her again, from beginning to end.

She was engrossed in the rhyming, and having only heard it twice (once on the video and once when my daughter read it), she immediately began shouting "Jump" at the end of each section before the page was even turned!

She has already insisted that the book cover be removed, since it just got in her way of holding the book and turning the pages. But, the book itself is high-quality. For a little kid from the computer age (she already plays games on the computer), having a book hold her attention and wanting it read more than once is a big deal.

So, I give this five stars - because it is Andromeda approved!

Edited - Andromeda continues to enjoy the book and the song, and has brought the book with her to the computer to watch the video of the song and turn the pages along with it. Of course, her favorite part is "and I ... JUMPED!" She looks forward to the whale when she can go "Swoosh." All-in-all, this has become a long-term favorite!

I got a copy of this book through the Amazon Vine program. I have a three year old son and was curious to get his take on the book. The book is based on a song by the author; check out his video posted here if you want to see what the book's about.

Basically each page has a rhyming phrase about an animal and then when a bigger animal comes along...then the first animal JUMPS! The content is very simple and the wording is lyrical and rhythmic.

From an educational aspect there's not a lot in this book, but from a fun aspect it is a great read.

My three year old son wasn't in love with the book the first time we read it; he thought it was kind of boring. On subsequent readings though he started getting into the JUMP! part of the story. By the third reading we were both jumping up and down at the JUMP parts and he was giggling and having a great time. It may not be his favorite book but it has grown into one that he picks up every now and then and he really gets the giggles reading it.

The artwork is very well done. It is bright and colorful and matches the content very well.

As a parent I am happy that it gives him the giggles, I also enjoy the artwork and the rhythm of the words. It is a pretty simple book though; as I mentioned at first my three year old son thought the story was a bit boring. So, I am guessing kids over age 5 or so won't be all that interested in it; that is unless you can get the whole room of kids jumping, then the fun will last until they are a bit older.

Overall I am happy we got this book. It is a great book to get kids moving and giggling.
