Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

With a simple, rhyming text and action-packed artwork, this picture book will appeal to young preschoolers, who will delight in the surprise turnaround on every double-page spread. Well, I’m a bug. I’m a bug. I’m a snug little bug, and I’m sleeping on a jug. Until I see a frog, and I . . . JUMP! says a fat-bellied bug, who flies off just in time to escape a leaping frog. Then it’s the frog’s turn to narrate: I’m a frog in a bog, and I’m sleeping like a log, until I see a cat, and I . . . JUMP! The story follows a similar pattern as the cat jumps from a hound, the hound from a croc, and so on until the final scene with a whale, who decides to end the tale. Even after kids have figured out what is coming, they will enjoy the animals’ shifts in power roles, all depicted in lively drawings, rendered in thick black lines and strong, bright colors against blank white space. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Hazel Rochman

Hi everyone! My name is Scott M. Fischer and I am the author/illustrator of JUMP!

What a lot of folks find surprising is that 'Jump' was actually a song long before it was a book! So I thought it would be a hoot to upload a video of me performing JUMP for the kiddies! (You get to see the whole book in this video too!) Remember to put your jumping shoes on!! Thanks everyone for the support!

A good children's librarian is never satisfied. Never content with his or her lot. It doesn't matter how many great read aloud picture books we've culled for our storytimes. Like Captain Ahab we're on the search for "the one". That great picture book that'll leave `em dead in the aisles (not literally . . . that would be a bit dark). We prowl the ALA Conventions, hunt the bookstore shelves, and sniff through professional journals never stopping, never ceasing. Our work is never done. In the course of my own searching, I stumbled on a little book of no extraordinary physical note. Jump! by Scott M. Fischer sits quietly on a shelf. No spangled doodads or pop-up whizbangs explode when you open it. No tinny tunes or scanimation wonders draw you in. It has words. It has pictures. It has pictures with words. It also has a beat and you can dance to it. Find yourself cornered at a three-year-old's birthday party and you have to read them something fun? Heading up your library's next toddler storytime and you need a book to get a crowd riled? Grab yourself some Jump! then, my friend. It's hep. It's hopping. It's happening to boot.

It starts, with a bug. "Well, I'm a bug. I'm a bug. I'm a snug little bug, and I'm sleeping on a jug. Until I see a frog, and I . . . . JUMP!" So it begins. The bug now gone (escaped, don't worry) the frog picks up the narrative, sleeping on a log, until a hound comes along and, you guessed it, the frog jumps. Various animals attempting to nap midday find their slumber consistently interrupted by other animals that may wish them harm. The cat leaps at the frog, the hound goes for the cat, the croc for the hound, the shark for the croc, and finally the whale for the shark, after which he ends the whole tale with a mighty "SPLOOSH!

We adore this book!!! My four year old daughter is so tickled by the many animals and their Jumping adventure. The watercolors are bright and friendly. Every time I read the book to her she then loves to recite it back to me, it has such a wonderful lyrical quality. Once she heard the song from the story (shown above) she was completely hooked!

"Jump" is the most requested book in the house right now for my two children and now the most requested song too! Get Jumping!

We got this book out of a Cheerios box and like it so much we are buying a hard copy. Our 1 1/2 year old son loves it and we enjoy reading it to him. Now whenever he tries to "jump" we start a game of saying the book where ever we are because we have it memorized.

So why buy the book if we already have a free copy? Because we believe in supporting the work of Authors/Artists in the hopes that they will continue to do more. Thanks Mr. Fischer!

What a wonderful little children's book! The story/song is catchy and the illustrations are fabulously done. Our 2 and 3 1/2 year olds love the book. We have two bookshelves filled with books for their age and they get to pick 2 or 3 every night for bedtime stories. Ever since receiving JUMP! they have been routinely picking this book up and have even taken to reading the story along with mom or dad.

The story is simple enough, short enough to keep their attention, and has a wonderful surprise ending. I highly recommend it for your collection.

Jump! is a very enjoyable children's book. It is appropriate for reading to non-readers and to be read alone by early readers. The word list is appropriately limited and repetitive. The sequence of events on each two-page spread follows a set pattern, making memorization easy. The watercolor illustrations are well done, colorful, and humorous. The repetition of the word "JUMP!" may cause too much activity for this to be a bedtime book.

The binding is sturdy. The illustration on the hard cover and the dust jacket are different. The frog is on the dust jacket and on the hard cover he has already jumped. In our house, we tend to lose and/or destroy dust jackets of children's books. Without the dust jacket, the title on the book is only on the spine. The difference is clever, but without the dust jacket, the book cover just doesn't look right.

One of the great ways for children to learn to recognize words and rhyming is through repetition. The language of this book is easy to follow and repetitive as the author tells the story of animals who jump (a little too late) from the animal that wants to eat them. The pictures are fun. Both my girls and 2 year old son enjoyed the story and pictures. They didn't seem to be bothered by the frog's leg hanging out of the cat's mouth--which surprised me. You can't tell quite as visually that the other smaller animals have been eaten by the bigger animals.

It is a fun, simple story that kids 2-4 years old will enjoy. The age range said 2-6, but I think I would recommend it to 2-4 year olds.
