Book Description

April 1992 9 and up4 and upTrailblazer Biographies
Zora's mother used to tell her to "Jump at de sun." She wanted Zora to be proud of herself and to do great things. This biography tells of her courageous struggle to write about the culture she valued. Zora was one of the first scholars to promote African-American culture as a self-contained heritage. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- In the last two years, there have been a number of books for young readers about African-American writer Zora Neale Hurston. This volume, written in engagingly fresh prose and attractively laid out in a large, clear type, is one of the best, equal in quality to Lyons's Sorrow's Kitchen (Scribners, 1990), but for a slightly younger audience. From the well-written narrative, readers pick up not only the flavor of her times, but also the flavor of Hurston--creative, funny, abrasive, and fickle. The well-chosen and appropriately placed black-and-white photographs serve not only to extend the text, but also to put faces on the many names that crop up in the story of Hurston's eventful life. Probably the most objective look at this highly individual writer yet to appear in print for children, the book presents Hurston's life as a story, a method that surely would have met with her approval. Use of her own words vastly enhances the presentation. A foreword by her niece adds a family dimension, and the thorough index and bibliography suit this for use as a report source. Porter observes in his afterword that "Jumping at the sun ain't easy." Hurston did it. Porter has as well, and with a stellar degree of success. --Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

This review is from: Jump at de Sun: The Story of Zora Neale Hurston (Trailblazer Biographies) (Paperback)
This book is very good, if you are doing research on Zora Neale Hurston or Eatonville, Florida that is. I don't mean to say that it is not good for anything else, I'm just saying that, as a 16 yr. old Junior in H.S., this is a great book for doing research in.
