I certainly hope this 2-CD set is re-stocked because, in my opinion, it's among the best ever to emerge from the Time-Life/EMI Music series of releases, a veritable treasure trove of 30 of the best jump, jive and swing tunes ever to hit the market. For the record, here are the contents of each disc:

Disc One
1. Jump, Jive 'N Wail - Louis Prima; 2. The House Of Blue Lights - Chuck Miller; 3. Why Don't You Haul Off And Love Me? - Bull Moose Jackson; 4. Cow-Cow Boogie - Freddie Slack & His Orchestra with vocal by Ella Mae Morse; 5. Rock The Joint - Chris Powell & The Five Blue Flames; 6. Rockin' Is Our Business - The Treniers; 7. Chicken-Shack Boogie - Amos Milburn; 8. Straighten Up And Fly Right - The King Cole Trio; 9. Saturday Night Fish Fry Parts 1 & 2 - Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five; 10. See You Later, Alligator - Bill Haley & His Comets; 11. Bloodshot Eyes - Wynonie Harris; 12. Hit, Git And Split - Young Jessie; 13. The Train Kept A-Rollin' - Tiny Bradshaw; 14. It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) - Duke Ellington & His Famous Orchestra; 15. The Hucklebuck (instrumental) - Paul Williams & His Hucklebuckers.

Disc Two
1. Bandstand Boogie - Les Elgart & His Orchestra; 2. Oh Babe! - Roy Milton & His Solid Senders; 3. Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop - Lionel Hampton & His Orchestra; 4. Hand Clappin' - Wilbert "Red" Prysock; 5. Jump Children - Dave Bartholomew & His Orchestra; 6. 5 Months, 2 Weeks, 2 Days - Louis Prima; 7. Drunk - Jimmy Liggins & His 3-D Music; 8. Minnie The Moocher (1942 version) - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra; 9. Choo Choo Ch-Boogie - Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five; 10. Pack Fair And Square - Big Walter (Price); 11. Safronia B - Calvin Boze; 12.

ok, most, if not all of this cd is already released by Rhino in their Blues collection, but who cares? Sure it's double dipping, but this music is at the heart of rock n roll. Yes music fans, Elvis was doing a cover song when he recorded "Hound Dog", and never really approached the nasty twist Big Mama Thorton's vocals gives the original. My only complaint is that there is plenty of other tunes out there Rhino could find, and the company has released these songs before. Still, even though I don't need to buy this to get any of the songs, to see them out again is a delight.

This collection from Time-Life Music by EMI-Capitol Music features 30 original recordings from familiar--and not so familiar--artists from the 1940s and 1950s. You can call it jump blues or swing or boogie-woogie or R&B or even early rock 'n' roll, but I defy you to listen to these tunes and keep your feet still!

Sure, there are the heavy hitters like Louis Prima's "Jump Jive an' Wail," Amos Milburn's "Chicken Shack Boogie," Louis Jordan's "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher," Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." But there are names that you won't recognize like Chris Powell & the Five Blue Flames or The Treniers or Calvin Boze. But taken altogether, this is nearly ninety minutes of get-out-of-your-seat-and-onto-the-dance-floor music. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Running time - Disc 1, 45:17; Disc 2, 42:01]
