Book Description

June 5, 2008
When the most hated landlord in San Francisco takes an unexpected jump off the roof of his own building, it isnat too hard to find suspects. But the police want to call it a suicide, since both the Mayor and press are complaining about the dismal closure rate for homicide investigations. Call it a suicide and no one has to solve the case.
But ex-cop Sam McGowan knows it was murder. He also knows that anyone living on the top floor of the building should be a suspect, including himself. So Sam decides to get to know his neighbors:
A lonely jazz singer more than willing to confess to any crime, past or present;
Two young women paying for graduate school by operating a website that reveals a lot more than their SAT scores;
The B-movie producer with a swollen prostate and shrinking bank balance;
And the brothers at the end of the hall, who just quit their day jobs to sell marijuana for the Mexican mob.
The only thing they have in common is a general agree-ment that their dead landlord got what he deserved--and that one of them is probably responsible. As more bodies surface and alliances shift, Sam finds himself jumping back and forth between his old life as a cop and his new one as a murder suspect, unable to decide where he really belongs.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Former San Francisco homicide detective Sam McGowan sees his plans for a peaceful early retirement go out the window around the same time as his despicable landlord, setting in motion the Rube Goldberg works of this wacky stand-alone from Maleeny, author of 2007's Stealing the Dragon and two other Cape Weathers investigations. Guilted into unofficial sleuthing by his ex-partner, who's the cop probing the fatal plunge, Sam quickly discovers no dearth of suspects among his quirky neighbors on the 20th floor—and a hotbed of criminal activity. Between the slacker brothers whose sandwich business serves as a distribution network for a Mexican drug lord, the two glamazons putting themselves through school with X-rated activities, a mysterious torch singer and the B-movie director who may be a blackmailer, we're firmly on darkly comic terra Hiaasen. Fast-paced and funny, this is a perfectly blended cocktail of escapism, with or without the beach towel. (June)

From School Library Journal

Cop Sam McGowan has been retired for one day when his landlord takes a dive off the roof of his building. The San Francisco police want to call it a suicide, but all signs point to murder. Sam talks to his neighbors on the top floor and finds that every one of them hated the dead man. Fast-paced, rollicking humor and characters right out of a—well, a 1930s Agatha Christie country house mystery—make this one of the best from the award-wining author of the Cape Weathers series (Stealing the Dragon). 5.0 out of 5 stars Great, light reading, July 14, 2009

This review is from: Jump (Hardcover)
This book was cross referenced to me by Amazon due to my enjoyment of Carl Hiaasen and Tim Dorsey. Maleeny incorporates the same type of wacky characters. From the dope dealing brothers to the soft porn queens as well as other residents of the apartment building, the characters will keep you reading and wondering what laugh is on the next page.

If you are the type of reader who enjoys laughing while reading, this book is for you. Also, if you are not familiar with the works of Hiaasen or Dorsey, give them a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go ahead and "Jump", April 17, 2009
This review is from: Jump (Hardcover)
I am a huge fan of author Tim Maleeny's "Cape Weathers Investigation" series so I was eager to read "Jump" and see what he could do with a new group of characters. I am here to say he doesn't disappoint. There are definite similarities between the Cape Weathers series of books and "Jump" with a San Francisco based story and a main protagonist that drives a classic Ford Mustang but that's about where the likeness ends. Like Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window", "Jump" primarily takes place in one fateful apartment building. Mr. Maleeny lets us be Jimmy Stewart and watch his characters intertwine and overlap as they all react to the opening scene of their not so lovable landlord's plunge off of the roof. Like players in a great stage play it was an absolute joy following the eccentric group of characters as they led me to the really fun surprise ending. Thank you Mr. Maleeny for another great read.
