4.0 out of 5 stars decent, for a six year old
This product will work quite well with XP or 2000. My daughter especially likes the explorer part. She has learned some things about ancient Egypt from this, and it seems to be getting her interested in other cultures. She is just now starting to get into the math CD, and it's a little hard for her, but she's catching on. Overall, it was a well-spent $19. It will...

It will work with Farstone's virtual CD, for those that are tired of saying "don't touch the shiny part" and washing CDs.

It's a decent product, although not as interesting or amazing as other learning-type software out there for this age group. The math and reading levels do not seem to be in sync with each other, but it's easy enough to go to the level that best fits your child. If you are an educated, progressive, and open-minded parent, the "magical" stuff won't bother you a bit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn, March 2, 2005

This program is a great way for kids to learn while they play. The treasure hunt aspect is something kids enjoy, and as for the reader's comments about it not being "Christian," perhaps it should be noted that Jump Start is not promoted as a "Christian" game. (Maybe Veggie Tales has something along those lines?)

As for the "magic" aspects, there is magic in everyday life, if one knows where to look. Any game that encourages kids to look for life's magic is well worth it -- much better than the majority of today's video games emphasizing war and killing.

From the beginning I have taught my son that peace is where we should put our focus, and for us, *all* is magic. Positive aspects, both in games and in life, are crucial...especially for kids. Jump Start supports that with its "Way to go!" attitude, upbeat style and encouragement.

If you're looking for a game for your child to practice adding, subtracting, and other academic skills, buy this game. If you prefer something with a Christian slant, there are many sites on the Internet and at your local Christian bookstore that would have something more suited to your taste.

3.0 out of 5 stars No worse than Disney!, December 30, 2005
This review is from: JumpStart 1st-3rd Grade Learning Playground (CD-ROM)
These cd's are fine in terms of content. There is no more magic in them than there is in a Disney movie. Now to grade the cd's on their REAL content: the explorers cd is excellent. My five year old can play the games and proceed just fine. It is great for teaching about other cultures. As for the math - well I was ready to toss it out! There are no instructions for how to play the games. It takes a lot of experimentation with the mouse, arrow keys, enter key etc. to figure out which tools are needed to do the tasks. As for the reading - we haven't tried that one yet.
